Canon 1000D?

Hi all,

I bought an old stock but still in the box 350D about a year ago but it went belly up after 6 months. Sent it back and the repairer lost it so I eventually got a full refund. I was quite happy with the 350D but now that I have to get another camera I was considering spending a few more dollars and getting a 1000D.

Does anyone know how well they go for astrophotography?

I've seen them on special for about $1000.

Adam

You can get a Body only Canon 1000D for $579 at D-D Photographics.
http://www.d-d-photographics.com.au/canoneos1000d.htm

I haven't got any hands on experience with the 1000D.

Well, the 40D and 450D are the ducks guts for astro, but the 1000D has all the tricks they have for less money albiet with a few non-astro related differences ( 10 vs 12.2meg CMOS sensor, not important, 2.5" viewer vs 3.0", some missing fancy focus features), and its lighter, so id say it would be an excellent choice with its lower price.

Andrew the d-d-photographics are "grey imports". This is not a problem if it doesn't break or you mod the camera front IR filter and you weigh this up against the fact you are getting a cheaper product .

But, due to the dollar down turn I have found that there is currently very little difference between "grey import stock prices" and Australian authorised products (although that said that price you stated is $100 Aust cheaper).

I just picked up a 450D (and decided against the 1000D for many reasons), "non-grey" and believe me I priced 1000Ds and 450Ds for the best price. I've very anal on matters like this.

Anyway the best "non-grey 1000D body " is Scorptec, $699 or Ryda $685:
http://www.scorptec.com.au/browse/3/724
http://www.ryda.com.au/Canon-EOS-100...p/eos1000d.htm

If you want I can post EOS 450D prices or places to look, which took me Weeks to research! If anything my research may help someone!

Absolutely.
I only quote d-d photographics as it's convenient to check prices online.
If I were in the market for a new camera I'd certainly shop around, I even haggle prices at places like Harvey Normans and Domayn because they are willing to match or come close to these grey import prices.
If they come close I wouldn't hesitate to buy from the main stores knowing they have good backup service.

It always pays to haggle.

Cheers.

Absolutely, it is a buyers market but...alas I only think it'll stay that way until new stock arrives at the new exchange rate prices.

That said Sub $1K for 1000D+ dual lens kits is normal, indeed sub $1k for 450D and basic IS lens is achievable....for the moment...

non-grey 1000D body from http://www.roadmogul.com.au for $668.79

they have the 450D body for $836.26

If you want to ensure that you are purchasing a genuine Canon Australia product that will be covered by warranty then check the part number against those provided in this pdf from Canon: http://canon.com.au/eos/images/downl...-importing.pdf

Funny enough that's where I picked up my 450D from..

edit:
probably for the OP, I should add...I tossed up between the 1000D and 450D and chose the 450D. Why? Probably not alot, the 450D has a faster "Raw" frame rate and bigger LCD for "live view focusing" and the 450D IR filter mod is well known where as the 1000D is only mod'd by Hutech USA at the moment. That doesn't mean it cannot be done it just means it is not as commonly done.

I looked this one up - lovely. Found a 1000D with a lens kit (for family shots) for $895 in Bris. Heading there to visit a mate this weekend, might just take a look.

I'll be sure to check

I've been using staticice.com.au for several years now.

Only for computing parts, though. I tend to always go back to umart.net (it's called something else now). They consistently rated cheap on staticice.

The 1000D IR filter mod is exactly the same as the 450D mod see http://ghonis2.ho8.com/rebelmod450d1.html
