There's a poster I know well on Cloudy Nights who's over 60,000. I remember noticing him cross 50,000 and then two weeks later he was at 51,000. Most of the high count guys seem to be in their more senior years, where life is a bit less hectic.

Hi Leon,

I’ve not done it here but on other forums I’ve been on the number of members I counted with zero post count was massive. There was even a rumour that some forum owners were actually entering dummy information just to be able to boast about how many thousands of members they had - perhaps to increase the possible value of selling advertising on a site or even boost the price to flog the whole forum later. There was also a rumour that some forum software could come 'pre-seeded' with dummy members just to kick start the first months when many might be less likely to join a forum with , say, only half a dozen prior members

But the prevalence of the same phenomenon on so many forums might suggest that a lot of people do actually join and then never say anything. Odd.

It’s also quite common (just check the beginner forums here) for people to join up and post something along the line sof “Hi I’m Fred, and I’m interested in astronomy. I’m looking forward to asking you guys some questions”. and then never actually asking anything! Of course if it’s “Hi, I’m Freda…” then they seem to get more replies and warm welcomes (funny about that… ) but are equally likely to never post again.

I think that word count is also an issue not just post count. We have some Twitter style posters here who post multiple one liners and others who really give their keyboards a workout.

I have a low post count, but - boy - can I waffle on when I get going…

Cheers,

Chris

You're too kind Alex. I'm apparently actually two months older than you are. The only possible explanation is that it must be an old photo.

When I hit 70 I decided I needed some new hobbies, so I chose astronomy and whisky. Not to become a drunk but to learn about the history and manufacture of the many different styles and brands. I'd been a virtual non-drinker for years and some friends were concerned that I might become too enthusiastic about drinking it (I didn't) so I took another picture just to prove that drinking whisky had no effect at all on me.

In the event it only stayed interesting for a few months, during which I spent a handful of cash obsessively collecting different bottles, only to find out that I had cheap tastes and very little ability to discern quality! Some of the collection is still under the stairs.

Perhaps I should use the photo as my avatar?

Cheers,

Chris

One can never be too kind. Kindness is a quality that should have no limits.
Which photo is an old photo..I am not sure what you mean.

Not sure about IIS but some forums do not display ads if you are logged in. This would explain why people create accounts and log in but never post. They just like to read without the ads.
