The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR)
is building an observatory housing a 1.75 metre telescope to determine the
nature and trajectory of objects in low-Earth orbit quickly, precisely and
reliably. Accurate data are important to avoid collisions between satellites
and space debris.
The observatory employs lasers for accurate range finding.
Construction work will begin at the end of May 2020 at the Empfingen
Innovation Campus in Baden-Württemberg. The inauguration is planned
for spring 2021.
