Webcam extension cable

I tried to use a USB extension cable that came with a printer to run the webcam without success.

Do I need a "special" camera extension cable?

A secondary thought - do I need a powered USB hub - is it that the camera just can't draw enough power over the additional 5 metres?

cheers

niko

Andrew,

additional to the cable on the camera.

the werid thing is the 5m cable works with the logitech webcam but not with the aGent that I've pulled apart. I soldered the black cable back on the board and it works when plugged directly into the computer but not with the extension cable.

strange!

the specification calls for 5m total between repeators doesn't it - ie 5m extension on a 2metre lead = 7m and therefore outside spec? Granted somethings work outside their design bounds, but you can't expect that everything will.

Hi Niko

When setting up for autoguiding with the DSI Pro ( which seems to be power hungry ) I connected a 5met usb extension lead to the short lead from the camera but the camera would not connect.

I replaced the standard 5met usb cable with a 5met usb repeater cable and the camera now fires up every time.

Tried using a powered hub but for some reason the DSI dosn't like the hub any where in the line.

Our lappy has two usb2 ports one of which is used for the DSI.
all other usb2 cables are connected to a PCMCIA card and kept separate from the DSI.

This works for us

thanks everyone.

tried a shorter usb cable which worked a treat. have a powered hub to try tonight.

now all I need is the laptop to stop giving me a "no video capture hardware error" and I'll be set

I can only relate to the Toucam. On one (Imaging) I use a normal 5m USB extension (total 7m) and on the other (Guiding) I use a boosted 5m USB extension (total 7m).

Both work fine.

I have recently connected a powered hub in the imaging USB line just in case.

Also, when I use the DSI-1c I HAVE to use both the Boosted USB cable AND the powered hub or she no work!
