Hi Paul,

On my camera, the centre focus point is the most sensitive point. It is designed specifically for focusing with lens with an aperture of f/2.8 (or bigger).

There's also hidden focus assist points sprinkled around the main focus points, which can be enabled or disabled through custom functions. They can be handy in difficult focusing situations or if you have a particular composition in mind.

I might be mistaken, but, I believe they may also be helpful for tracking your subject when using AI Servo AF focus mode.
