Large Magellanic Cloud Widefield

This is one of my first forays into astrophotography. It was taken at my first Astrophotography Imaging camp at the Bendleby Ranges in March 2016.

Nikon D810A, Rokinon 135mm f/2.0@f/2.8, ISO 800, 180 seconds on an HEQ5 Pro, unguided.

Welcome to IIS Jarrod. Fancy seeing you here.

Great field of view with interesting looking perspective and cleared areas around the galaxy. I would perhaps tone down the saturation a little if it were me, but it is still a fine image. Well done.

I know, I know. It's so scary here!! Yeah.. cooked the colours to 11!

I'll reprocess this again as practice. I'll leave this on the Wall of Shame.

That's excellent Jarrod what a great field of view for this target, really shows all the major LMC structures well. If, as you suggest, you are planning to tweek it a little, the local contrast enhancement has resulted in some dark areas being a little over emphasised, so perhaps re balancing that aspect may improve the overall naturalness of the image?

Otherwise, great work

Mike

Thank you Mike. I've just looked at it on the monitor at home and it looks scary!! Time for another iteration.

Convincingly a full-on barred spiral galaxy, not just a fuzzy patch. Well done!

A terrific image. Funny you used the Rokinon 135/2 I was just thinking of that lens for astrophotography use.

How do you like it? I read its IQ is as good as the Zeiss 135/1.8 and better than the Canon 135/2.0.

My experience with Samyang (Rokinon) is limited but the 24mm 1.4 I got I had to have replaced as it was defective. The 2nd copy was good. Did you have to do that?

Greg.

That seems an excellent focal length for this target Jarrod. It isolates it nicely.
Well done.
(Post any second attempt at processing on this one please, I'd be interested to see it.)

Thank you all for the encouragement, Mike n Trish, Greg, Louis and Trevor.

I think you read the same reviews that I did about the lens, Trevor. It is a fine solid lens (that has survived a 1.5mt drop as well). And I was worried, as you say about the quality control issue. I have been lucky with both my Samyang/Rokinon 135mm and 12mm fisheye and have not had to return them. I love the lens! One day I hope to attach it to a CCD camera and see how it fares! Cheers!

Fantastic Jarrod! I'd agree that the saturation has been pushed a bit too hard as it evident around the Tarantula region. Beautiful shot though.
