Canon 6D or Sony A7(r) for astrophotography?

I was all set to purchase a Canon 6D before Christmas, until I started reading about the Sony A7. At first I shrugged it off as I was too heavily invested in Canon lenses, however as I found out the AF will still work with a Metabones adapter mounted on the Sony. I've read mixed reports though about the AF, with most saying it's slower on the Sony then its native body?

My main interests are landscapes and astrophotography (wide-field and dso). It seems the Astro community is heavily biased towards Canon, e.g. light pollution filters, BackyardEOS, attachments etc...

Just wondering if anyone has gone through a similar process and what their thoughts are ?

Can't comment on the A7(r) specifically as I can't afford one ( or can't justify affording one ) but I have the SLT A77v and love it. It's only downfall for astro is no 'LiveView' type capability. Design, ease of use, great menu options and a stunning sensor and frame rate. It gets used for everything.

It would be good to see a side by side comparison image of the night sky with both cameras.

A7r has the same sensor as the Nikon D800E which is an impressive camera. You could also (almost) buy two 6Ds for the price of the A7r.

People do astro-image with non-Canon cameras, they just need to look a little further afield for software.

Cheers,
Cam

For that money I'd be starting to think that going to CCD would be a better option.

In the end I was offered an extremely good deal on a Canon 6D which I couldn't pass up, so I settled for that Can't wait to start testing it!

How much did you get the 6D for, Mohammed? I'm in the market for one before heading to Iceland.

Hi Humayun,

I bought it from Digidirect for $1670 before the $200 cash back offer, so it's $1470 after cashback. I thought that was pretty good considering it's not grey market and comes with extra year of warranty.

It's a beautiful camera and i'm sure you'll love it

Mohammed

Hey mate,

Thanks for the reply.

I see you tried sending a pm -- my inbox was full. I've just cleared a couple of old messages.

Cheers.
