You can only officially buy the latest Photoshop, which is CS5.

The alternative to Photoshop which is hideously expensive, is PixInsight which is very cheap in comparison.

Photoshop is the one most use and is extremely powerful. PixInsight though is very good but its quite different to Photoshop.

Looking outside the well known Graphix apps has anyone had a play with Photofiltre ? It is reputedly very powerful and well featured but also free. I used it a few years ago and it had all the capabilities of Photoshop at the time. Find it on www.snapfiles.com in the Free Section under the Graphics and Photo Heading, Image processing.

There is always GIMP. Its free and pretty much photoshop. Only catch is you need linux. Unless it has been ported to windows recently.

GIMP has a steep learning curve. It's too complex for me.

I also use GIMP with a few add-ons. It's layout is complex but is almost as functional compared to PS.

That is true but compared to the cost of P/S I persisted with the learning curve and I am glad I did it does everything that P/S does.

It's the price that is the winner

I don't have Power Shop. I do have GIMP but don't use it.

For cropping screen prints, I use Windows Paint. And for resizing, I use IrfanView. I also have the software that came with my Canon 450D and Panasonic TZ10 but don't use them either.

Oops! That should have been Photo Shop.

That's what you get when you've only had a couple of hours sleep.

BTW This post was made with my iPod Touch.

You mentioned yr two sons. Why not just buy a student version of PS for $179. That's what I just did, and for the learning curve, I've ordered a book from amazon for $50. That way, you can have the industry standard at a reasonable price.
