Mudgee Observing report 4th-8th November 2010 -- NGCLes

Hi All,

It's been quite a while since I posted any observing notes but as we all know, the cloud has almost been ceaseless for months. The only other opportunity for some dark sky was back in September when I grabbed a couple of hours at Bargo to make fresh observations of a number of objects for a Deep Sky Delights article for October next year -- so I had to embargo those.

But a trip to Mudgee had been in the planning for 7 months in November and we'd hoped to get a bit of a break over the other side of the ranges. I've never seen Mudgee so green in the 13-odd years I've been observing there. It was like lush English coutryside. All the rivers and creeks are flowing strongly and the dams are full with the patterson's curse in full-bloom painting the fields purple here and there. Really beautiful.

As it turned out, on night one (4th) I got about 45 mins just a twilight was deepening and then the clouds rolled in and rain overenight.

On night two (5th) was thick cloud all night.

The one and only good, clear night was night three (6th) that apart from the odd wispy-job was really quite good and very dark. I made recorded observations from 10pm till about 2.30am. The SQM-L reading at 1am was 21.85 (ZLM= 6.55) and the "worst" reading for the night earlier on was 21.79 (ZLM = 6.52).

Night four (7th) was cloudy until just after midnight but I didn't set-up till almost 1am fearing it was a sucker-hole. The sky did look quite good but I nearly suffered apoplexy when the first reading with the SQM-L produced a 21.93 (ZLM= 6.59)! Readings in the 21.9-22.1 bracket indicate a basically flawless "professional observatory-grade" sky. All night there had been flashes of very distant lightning to the northwest and north. We then observed until about 4am when false dawn broke, though I only recorded observations until 2.45am and then had a bit of a tour around. The worst reading on the SQM-L that morning was 21.85. Though I didn't recod them, I finished the night by tracking down all of the Fornax Dwarf Globular Clusters (6). While the brightest is NGC 1049, the others aren't a great deal worse. I'd seen four of them before with 25cm under a proper dark sky but this was the first time I'd seen all six.

Anyway, here are the other observations over the 7-odd hours of observing that were recorded over the two nights. They are all galaxies in Eridanus with the exception of Comet 103/P (Hartley).

Of this pair, -45 is easily the brighter and it appears at the W of a short 5' long line of mags 10 & 11 *s that also has some fainter *s in it. There is a mag 15 * just off the edge of the halo on the E side. Slightly elong in PA 45, pretty small
, 1.25' x 45" grows slightly to centre where there is a small, similarly elong slightly brighter core zone. There is a small attached faint spot off the NE side that is PGC 95386? or MAC 0154-5641 or low but not unreasonable SB and only 15" diameter.

-54 is SSE by 5' and is a much smaller and round faint eg with quite LSB growing broadly and slightly to the centre but without any noticeable core or nucleus.

This is a quite compact and lowish SB eg that forms an almost RA tri with 12.5 and 13th mags *s to its NNW and ENE close by not far outside the halo. Quite compact and weakly elong in about PA 135, 40" x 30" growing broadly and mod to centre from indefinite edges to a small, < 10" diameter slightly brighter core region. There is a very faint mag 15.5 * not far outside the halo to the W.

This eg appears imm S of a faint star that is the S most one in a tiny tri of mags 14.5, 15 and 15.5 *s -- the latter is just on the edge of the halo. The g itself is probably nearly 1' diameter, round, diaphanous, low S halo brightening weakly to centre without any apparent core, zones or nucleus.

This eg appears pretty much due S of a mag 10 * by about 6'. Mod faint, quite small, 50" diameter looking like a distant elliptical type eg, off round in PA 90, 50" x 40" growing evenly and slightly at first and then near centre moderately to an occasionally visible faint stellaring in the centre. No other *s associated.

The brightest in this group, IC 1812 marks the N point of an Eq tri made with the line of -15, IC -10 and -21 at the south. This triangle barely fits in the 12mm field. Inside the tri is ESO 246-16, -20 and MCG -7-6-11 that form a W-E line parallel to the bottom line mentioned. ESO -13 is one field NW from the centre of this group.

The brightest is IC1812. ESO 246-21 at the E end of the bottom line of the tri is the brightest of the non-NGC objects and probably 2nd brightest of the group. -21 is just W of a mag 12.5 * and is a reasonably sizable eg -- in PA 0, maybe 1.75' x 1.5' looks like a spiral growing broadly and slightly to centre where there is a small mod brighter zone at centre. The mag 12 * is just on the edge of the halo and there is a mag 15.5 * just on the halo to the S.

IC 1810 is in the centre of the line of 3 at bottom. Round, has slightly higher overall SB than --21 but a little more compact. Around 1' diameter or just over, round growing broadly and slightly to centre without zones but has a hint of a faint stellaring at centre. ESO 246-15 at the W end of the line and is slightly elong in PA 150, 40" x 20" and softer looking than the other major members. Seems to have a compact, 5" dia slightly brighter spot at centre.

IC 1812 at the N tip of the tri is about 1.5' diameter and seems round, grows from indefinite edge slightly to centre where there is a 20" diameter slightly brighter zone containing a very faint *ar nucleus.

In the centre of the tri is a mag 12.5 * and just below it running E-W is the other line. ESO 246-16 & -20 are very small and faint. Both look generally quite similar, 30" x 10" brightening slightly to centre. The former is in PA 90 and the other in PA 60. These two almost point at the third member MCG -7-6-11 that is by a distance the faintest of the group. Only intermittently visible nr threshold at x247 as a tiny spot of gossamer about 15" diameter.

ESO 246-13 stands apart from the group to the NW by one field and is a small spot of haze about 30" diameter, round rising slightly to centre. Not hard to see but mod faint.

This eg is at the vertex of a short broad I tri made with mags 12 & 13 *s to the E and S. No worse than mod faint, lowish SB probably a bit under 1' diameter growing broadly and slightly to the centre where there is a small, slightly brighter zone.

-08 was immediately visible though it does have quite low SB. Small, 30-40" diameter, no *s associated, round growing broadly and slightly to centre with a hint of a small, slightly brighter zone at centre. --10 is to the NE by 10'.

-10 an extremely LSB wisp of gossamer in about PA 0, 2.25' x 10", though it is difficult to gauge the width of the minor axis because it is so diffuse and gossamery and ill-defined at the flanks. Grows hardly at all to centre with no evidence of zones, core or nucleus. There is a mag 15 * on axis in the N-side of the halo, 1' from centre

MCG -1-8-11 is 5' SE of -08 and is a similar-looking object to -08, perhaps a little better in SB but about the same size and has a similar appearance. Has a mag 13 * a little to the N off the halo.

The NGC eg is the brightest of this pair and it is a little elong in about PA 45 and has a mag 13.5 * superimposed almost on axis, but a fraction south. 1.75' x 20" in that PA and the star is a nuisance in gauging detail. Say it brightens broadly and slightly to centre. Reasonable though low SB. IC 1853 is 2' due S. Somewhat fainter, round, 30-40" diameter and brightens weakly to centre but has no core or nucleus.

These are both really quite faint eg's that seem worse than the magnitudes indicate. If anything the MCG eg is slightly the brighter, though they are really quite similar and sep by only about 5' E-W. Both very small, 30-odd arc-sec diameter, round and grow slightly to centre without zones. The MCG eg has a mag 13.5 * just N by about 40". Revise the MCG eg is elong slightly in PA 90. Te major eg in tis group is -70 that sits a little to the E of a small tri of mag 12 *s and seems better than the DSS makes it reasonable SB, lowish, round about 1.25' diameter growing evenly and slightly at first and nr centre moderately to a small, not well defined 5-7" diameter core zone with goodish SB. -72 is to it's E by about 6'. -50 is easily the brightest of the -50 + -51 pair with the others in adjacent fields. -51 is only 2' N of -50 and they are about 8' E of a mag 8*. -50 is a small faint eg, though much the brighter, mod faint, round, 50" diameter with ill-defined edges to the halo growing slightly to centre where there is a tiny slightly brighter zone.

-51 is very tiny and much fainter. Only about 20" diameter, round spot of gossamer with no visible structure.

-57 is 15' SE of this pair and a little W of a mag 12 *. Extremely faint and tiny at x247, only A.V + concentration as a 15" diameter spot of weak gossamer with no structure.

MCG -3-8 52 is 12' NE of the pair and though better than -57 is still a very faint spot a little elong in PA 45, 30" x 20" with a weak central brightening.

This is a very small and faint eg in a pretty blank field that has little in it. 20-30" diameter, round quite to very faint and of very LSB. Grows broadly and slightly to centre without zones core or nucleus.

From the NGC/IC project:

NGC 1182 is almost certainly = NGC 1205. Both objects were found by Ormond Stone with the 26-inch refractor at Leander McCormick. As with all of the nebulae published in the first AJ paper from LM, the positions are crudely given to just a full minute of time and an arcminute. In this case, the two positions flank the actual position, with NGC 1182 being about a minute of time to the west, and NGC 1205 about two minutes east (this latter error is a common one in the Leander McCormick lists). The declination is within an arcminute in both cases. There are no sketches for either of these.

Stone's descriptions of the nebulae are almost identical (m = 15.5, Dxd =
0.7x0.3, extended 120deg; *10 PA = 240deg, dist = 2.5 arcmin and m = 14.0 Dxd = 0.7x0.3, extended 25deg; *9.5 PA = 240deg, dist = 3.0 arcmin). Only the magnitudes and position angles are different enough to attract attention. Howe suggested that the two objects were the same, and put the star 8 seconds west and 2 arcmin south of the galaxy (I measure 8.1 seconds and 1 arcmin 27 arcsec; the separation is 2.47 arcmin). I suspect that the position angle of 25 degrees is a transcription error for "125"; the difference in magnitude could be the result of different observing conditions.

There is a galaxy, NPM1G -09.0141, closer to the position for NGC 1205 and with a star at approximately the right distance and position angle. But the galaxy is considerably fainter than NGC 1182. Its position is also off in
declination as well as RA, so I think it is unlikely to be Stone's second
object, especially since he makes the eastern one brighter than the western.

-76 is a small but reasonable SB eg in about PA 45. Small, seems like an elong spiral only 40" x 15" grows mod and broadly to centre where the SB is quite good. At first glance it almost loos stellar because it has a small mag 14th mag non*ar stellaring nucleus. MCG-3-8-57 is 30' E.

-57 is a face on round spiral that appears 1.5' diameter and round. Good size, mod low SB. 4' further E is a mag 12.5 *. Ill defined edges grows broadly and slightly to centre with no defined core. SB is low but okay.

The brightest of this group is NGC 1200. Four are in a compact rectangle while -04 is to their SE by 20'.

-00 is a fairly small, reasonable SB round eg about 1.25' diameter or maybe a little bigger, growing slightly to centre where there is a small round mod brighter spot core. It has a faint mag 15.5 * just on the edge of the halo to the S that sky-view indicates is USNOA2 0750-00685292 with a magnitude of 16.4 -- that seems too faint to me. IC 285 is about 3' away SE.

-85 is a somewhat fainter slightly elong in PA 120. 30" x 20" it has somewhat lower SB and is only slightly brighter at centre with no core or nucleus. -96 is 6' SW of -00.

-96 and -95 are about 2' apart with -95 due N of -96, there is a mag 13.5 * almost between them. -96 is the brighter of the two, 40" diameter, round and grows slightly to centre without zones but has a compact, faint, almost stellar spot nucleus. -95 is only about 20" diameter, round and has quite low SB growing weakly to centre.

-04 is a slightly elong eg that is almost on top of a very distracting 12th mag * that is in turn, the brightest in a small, long triangle to the eg's S. Seems about 30" x 15" in about PA 90, faint and very LSB brightening weakly to centre -- this is hard to see because of the mag 12 * just S of centre off the flank.

-14, -15, -16, and -50 are components A-D of Hickson 23. Component E is just N of -15 on the DSS and wasn't visible. -08, -80 and -48 are nearby but not directly associated with the Hickson group of 4 visible eg.

-08 Is the brightest of this group and is found just S of a small RA tri of *s mags 11-12. Pretty good SB quite elong eg in PA 60. Oval 1.5' x 15"grows broadly and moderately to centre without structure but the inner regions have fairly good S.B. -14 is 10' E. and it has -15 4' SE and -16 a further 3' SE.

-14 is in PA 45 an elong halo, 50" x10"growing slightly to centre. Eg is really quite faint. While it has no defined core zone, it is moderately brighter at centre.

-15 is in PA 15 an oval shape 40" x 20" with a very faint stellaring in the centre and has the lowest SB of this line of 3.
The outer halo in the DSS is not visible.

-16 is in PA 75 and while it is faint has reasonable SB but very tiny 20" x 5" splinter.

-50 is a small, round splodge of haze 5' SW of -15, 20" diameter with no structure and is very faint and LSB. SW by 10' from the Hickson group eg's is IC 1880.

-80 is close W from a mag 12 * and is a pretty LSB eg, oval elong in PA 30, 50" x 40" growing weakly to centre where there is a compact mod brighter spot in the centre. Another 5' SW is -48 that is also a very, very faint eg. A spot of gossamer 20" diameter, weak central brightening, no structure.

These four eg run in an almost evenly spaced, slightly curved 20' long line that runs from N-S -25, -23, -21 & -86. All four are fairly similar in brihtness and surface brightness.

-86 is a fairly faint eg a fraction N of a mag 13.5 *. Small, perhaps slightly oval halo in PA 0. 30" diameter growing broadly and slightly to centre but with no visible core or nucleus.

-21 is just N of the hypotenuse of a RA tri of 11 & 12 *s and close to the faintest star in the tri. Seems elong in about PA 0, about 40" x 15", oval with smallish round slightly brighter core zone but to apparent nucleus.

-23 is seems the most round but small, probably about 30" diameter with a small slightly brighter core zone.

-25 is slightly elong in PA 150, maybe 30" x 20" with a slight broad brightening to centre with a hint of a very faint stellaring in the centre.

These three form a RA Tri and all fit comfortably in the one field.

-45 is the faintest and smallest of the three, round, about 30" diameter with a faint, tenuous outer halo with indefinite boundaries and dominated by a faint stellaring at centre that doesn't seem to have any surrounding core.

-46 is elong in about PA 60, oval, 1' x 40" with a substantial, maybe 20" x 10" slightly brighter core zone with a faint *ar nucleus at centre.

-80 is about 2' N of a mag 11 * that is quite distracting. Oval 40" x 20" of consistent pretty low SB with indefinite edges and no apparent core or nucleus.

-52 is easily the brightest of this pair and -55 is to its ESE by about 7'. -52 is an elong eg roughly in about PA 90, though it is crossed by a bar in PA 0. Oval halo seems probably 1.5' x 40" dilute outer halo growing weakly to a slightly brighter bar crossing the halo at right-angles that it turns grows to centre where there is a very faint *ar nucleus.

-55 is only a tiny spot about 15" diameter of consistent V/LSB gossamer with no central brightening.

These two are in adjacent fields basically N-S of each other and sep by about 16'.

-47 is a couple of arcmins W of a mag 8* that is quite distracting. Tiny spot of gossamer haze, about 20" diameter with no apparent structure. Very faint and LSB.

-50 is also very small and round. Has no *s associated. Very small, 30" diameter round spot very LSB and quite faint though a little brighter than -47, grows slightly to centre where there is a faint hint of an occasional stellaring.

These three are in a trio in an almost Eq tri about 6' a side with -41 to the W and -51 & -49 N-S of each other. Inside the tri made by the egs, is a smaller tri of mags 12.5-14 *s. -41 is the brightest followed by -49.

-41 is elong in about PA 90 about 1' x 20" and points at the stars in the centre of the tri. Reasonable SB outer halo growing to a small, mod brighter similarly elong core zone.

-49 is about 20-30" diameter, round growing slightly to centre where there is a hint of a tiny faint stellaring.

-51 is maybe a little bigger than -49, 30" diameter but is otherwise basically the same other than having slightly lower SB.

These two are about 10' apart and basically N-S of each other with -67 to the N.

-67 appears to the NE of a small tri of mags 10, 10.5 & 12 *s. Small, round spot probably almost 30" diameter growing broadly and slightly to the centre without core, zones or nucleus. SB is pretty low.

-70 is a quite elong little smudge in PA 15 soft and LBS quite elong 1' x 20" with a hint of a small, elong, slightly brighter core zone at centre.

The three NGC egs form a small slightly lengthened S tri that seems to point W with -72 at that tip. All three look basically similar. The Tri they form is only 5' x 3'. x247 very faint egs with -78 the worst and quite LSB mod to quite faint. All about 20-30" diameter, round growing slightly to centre without apparent core or nucleus.

MGC-2-10-21 is found 1 field to the S about 12' away. It is about 1' diameter, small and consistent SB diaphanous LSB patch of gossamer with virtually no central brightening.

A few nights later, I was in Hawaii on top of Mauna Kea at the Gemini Observatory, but that's another story I'll tell elsewhere ...

Best,

Les D

Another great account of an impressive swag of observations there Les. What a fantastic haul of galaxies and galaxy groups over fairly constrained observing sessions. Well done! And as always I'm blown away by how much detail you can pick out on some fairly faint objects. Thanks for a great report, as usual, Les.
