What I find really daunting about DSLR’s are the prospective longevity of the models compared to the old 35mm film SLR’s.

I still have my Pentax KM’s (x2) from 1976 with original lenses from that era and for most day to day photography, they are still excellent performers; except that I just don’t use them anymore, due to the convenience of the Pentax *ist DS DSLR. I’ve had my Pentax *ist DS for a couple of years now and I’m wondering if it will last as long as the KM’s, which have been up Mont Blanc (4807 metres), in the Cairngorms (-20 deg C) and stuffed into a rucksack that took a 150m tumble down a rock face.

I don’t mind forking out good money for good equipment, but if modern digital cameras may only last for say, 3 to 5 years, it is a hard ask to write off that kind of money.

Cheers

What a joke! US$1800 = AU $2140 at the moment. I've never bought anything significant from Ted's before, and prices like that are exactly why I probably never will. They never seem to have any good prices on Nikon gear whenever I'm looking for something.

When the D300 becomes available in November I'd expect the price to be under AU$2600, thats about what I paid for my D200 after it was released 2 years ago for the same US$ price. If the demand for the D300 is below that of the D200 when it was released (there were long waiting lists), I'd expect the local price to go below AU$2300 pretty quickly, and the US price to go to US$1600-1700. It will get cheaper, but I would never expect is to be cheaper than a 40D. If I was going to buy a D300 (which I might), I'd wait until after Christmas and import one

I doubt it if the D300 will be that much. Ive never bought anything from the aforementioned camera dealer & never will, simply too darned expensive. Retail shops have much larger mark ups...I buy all my stuff($10,000 in past year) from a Sydney based online company & the savings are almost laughable compared to what you'd pay 'over the counter' in a camera shop. Also, watch the aussie dollar, if it rises prices drop(at my online dealer at least). The D200 was $2300 when released...a couple of months ago it was $1799 online.

Robin,

I was going to say 1799 is a great price for the D200. If you don't mind saying, who is the online company you deal with?

I was actually toying with the idea of a D300, sounds like a great camera. But my heart is set on a 5D at the moment, even if AF and speed are not in the same league.

Would the Nikon be a bad move for you Terry, given your swag of Canon lenses?

Hi Dennis,

Your right the reality is I am locked into the Canon System with lenses. I also want full frame, so this is why I am set on the 5D (Canon).

Its good to look and see what other manfacturers are up to though

I just returned from a few days away and we visited Underwater World at Mooloolaba and Steve Irwin’s Australia Zoo. I noted that all the staff photographers were touting Nikon D200’s.

Cheers

Some - promising - preliminary long exposure tests on the D3 and D300:

http://astrosurf.com/buil/nikon_test/test.htm

Biggest news is that it looks like they have now eliminated the long exposure Noise reduction filter (i.e star reduction filter!), making the cameras better suited for astrophotography.
