Wedge or Auto-Guider

Hi guys, I have a Celestron CPC 800 and I am wondering which is the best to invest in first, a wedge or an auto-guider? I want to be able to do exposures longer than 30 seconds without getting star trails. I think the wedge is probably the better of the two, however any advice would be much appreciated Thanks!!

wedge etc

I think you would find a wedge AND an autoguider would be needed for long exposures- if I assume your cpc is fork mounted.
Saying that a wedge could get you maybe a bit longer if you were really accurately polar aligned.
Autoguiders don't have to be expensive- any old webcam could be used as one with the right nose piece and software.
Plenty of opportunity to grab second hand ones as well on this web site in the classifieds.
Software- free is PHD guiding- will use webcams or most other guide cams and is simple to use.
Good luck mate!
Graham.

Auto guiding is not possible with a Alt-Az Celestron fork mount (It was (is?) possible with the Meade Lx200 forks)
Without even considering a de-rotator (!) a good solid wedge and sturdy tripod/ pillar is the way to go.
(Having said that, taking images at a f10, 2000mm focal length is not the easiest way to start - a smaller refractor mounted piggy-back may be an easier "learning" solution.)
