Question about filters for DLRS

I was told that if I needed any questions answered about cameras and accessories this was the place to do it. So here goes.

When my old man gave me the Samsung GX-1L with 2 lenses, there was a filter on the front of one of them. It is a Flexar 55mm SKYLIGHT (1B) made in Japan. Could some one please tell me what it would be used for. I noticed that it makes the image just a wee bit darker, not much though.

Cheers - Craig.

Usually the main reason a lot of people use these is to protect the camera lens from dust, dirt scratches etc. As you say it doesn't do much to the image

Skylight filters also filter out UV and can make clouds look a little more prominent. For an explanation and some comparison images click here
