iPhone/iPad - red screen mode

Not sure how many know this - I was shown it by a fellow IISer.

In iOS10 there is a setting to apply a colour filter system-wide - which prevents being blinded by the lock screen or if you accidentally quit Sky Safari:

Settings > General > Accessibility > Display Accommodation > Colour Filter...

Turn this ON (the default is OFF) and choose deep red.

In Sky Safari, set the display to monochrome otherwise blue text will be filtered out as black.

You can assign it to the accessibility shortcut (triple-click of the Home button). Settings > General > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut (right at the bottom).

If Colour Filters is the only accessibility feature you have enabled then the triple-click will toggle between red and normal. If you have multiple accessibility options enabled then you'll get a popup upon triple-clicking, letting you select which one to enable/disable.

Not available on iPhone 5 with iOS 10.3.2. iPhone 5s minimum required. Also not available on iPad mini with iOS 9.3.5.

This indeed works very good, but backlight bleeding still lets some white light passing through, which lowers contrast. A red foil overlay increases contrast considerably, even in "red mode".
With a red foil it is really red and without it is more orangish in the dark.

This is true. At a really dark site its still too bright with the screen turned down to minimum, and I agree a red film could be desirable. Still... it is a very good start although buried rather deeply in menus.

Now if only Apple would do same in OSX...
