The 5D is 12.8 MP, 40D is 10.1 MP. The 5D has a better build quality - better weather sealing, shutter rated to 300K, not 100K. As a result, it is double the price.

But unless you are a serious pro photographer, probably the main difference is that the 5D only takes EF lenses, and not EF-S lenses. The 40D takes both. This has both advantages and disadvantages.

There is suppose to be a new 5D coming out soon - a 15.3 MP. But probably wait a while and a new ?0D will come out - a 45D or a 50D? Maybe 12.8 MP?

Is that for Astro only, Terestial or both?. The 40D for the price is the go for astro, hands down.

That new 5D in the link sound spretty nice though.

I have a 40D for terrestial. It s a beautiful camera and the new digic 3 and 14 bit A/D makes a noticeable difference to the images.

Greg.

if it were only for astro, the 40d hands down. If for both, i'd want a 5d but for the money a 40d is still a very close 2nd in my book. It comes down to whether you can justify the extra cost compared to the features.. Most people dont, and the lack of ef-s support forces you to bux more expensive lenses too.

Cameras tend to follow "Paranti's Law" (not sure of the spelling).

"You get 80% of the effect for 20% of the cost."

Compared to a 5D, a 450D cost about 20% and gives you 80% of a 5D, and a 40D gives you 90% for 50% of the cost. The about to be released 1000D will give maybe 70% at 15% of the cost.

As for lenses, there isn't that much difference in price - a EFS 17-55 f2.8 cost $2000 (RP) and the (almost) equivalent EF 24-70 f2.8 cost $2400 (RP). Halve these prices if you shop around... The 24-70 has better weather sealing and is a bit wider (on 35 mm).

Of course there are also 'budget' canon lenses, but if you buy a $3000 camera, why put a crap lens on it. I just replaced my 17-85 with the much better 17-55.

Probably the best thing about having a 5D is showing it off with a L-series lens with the sexy red stripe around it....

Suzy, I couldnt agree more... I walk around with my 300/350D's and the best thing about it is showing off L Glass... 300mm f/4L looks pretty silly hanging off a tiny 350D..

Hi Susy

I think you meant to write “Pareto Principle” rather than “Paranti's Law”?

Cheers

Hi Nick

L stands for “Luxury” which describes Canon’s professional series of lenses with superior materials and build quality = expensive!

Sorry you're not quite right Dennis, regarding what the Canon 'L' stands for, but you are on the right track - it actually means "As expensive as 'L'"

As Dennis mentioned, as well as the better quality glass, the L lenses also have better weather sealing and are mechanically better built. My 70-200 L f2.8 is all metal and glass and there are very few plastic bits to it. As a result it weights 1310 grams and has a rrp of $2400. Compare this to the 55 - 200 which weighs 310 grams and a rrp of $449. But if I was attacked, I could bludgeon my attacker to death with the L lens and after wiping of the blood, be ready to take some more photos. The 55-200 would just crumble.

Actually, some of the non-'L' lenses do actually use L glass and design - the 17-55 f2.8 is an example, and I think the 60 macro is as well, but they lack the weather sealing.

Allso thinks Dannis four correkting mi spilling four 'Pareto'.

Hi Suzy

Actually, I was quite impressed with your original reference as it led to a book titled “Inventing Reality: The Politics of News Media” by Michael Parenti – you are obviously a well read person!

He seems to have published several “meaty” books covering the politics of the media.

Cheers

Dennis

Too many books - was just sitting outside in the sunshine reading 'The Death and Life of Great American Cities' by Jane Jacobs. Next to my computer at the moment is 'Perspectives of Modern Physics' by Arthur Beiser, 'Art and Technics' by Lewis Mumford, the CRC Handbook of Chemisty and Physics, 'Cities for a small planet' by Richard Rogers, 'Desert Flower' by Waris Dirie...

Next to my bed is 'Europe in the 20th Century' by George Lichtheim, 'Voices from the stars' by Tom Scotland, 'The New Autonomous House' by Brenda and Robert Vale, 'This Boy's Life' by Tobias Wolf, 'The Battle of Britain' by John Ray...
