M20 First attempt with ZWO gear

Quick grab of M20 the Trifid Nebula last night to trial the new setup. First one had to be the Trifid, Hii emission region, open star cluster, reflection nebula, dark nebula...it’s an all-in-one DSO!

43 x 120 sec, ZWO IR-cut filter, ZWO ASI294MC Pro, ZWO ASIAIR Pro, stacked by ASIAIR Pro Live Stack and tweaked in iPhone stock Photo app, Saxon FCD100 ED127, auto guided with ZWO Mini Guide Scope and ZWO ASI120MC-S. SW NEQ6 Pro.

PS. I haven't learnt any other software yet hence the iPhone edit! Got the trial version of Astro Pixel Processor but the learning curve is steep.

Comments and suggestions welcome!

Generally speaking, a ripper, but your sky is too black, which means that
some of M20's nebulosity is lost. There is quite a lot more blue to be had.
Here is an early effort of mine from many years ago; it also has a slightly too black sky, but not as much as yours, and consequently shows a lot more blue practically enveloping the nebula.

For the end to end process to have been done with an iPhone and ZWO controller you’ve got a great result
My main suggestion editing wise would be to download Lightroom for Mobile. It’s free and light years ahead of the native iPhone editing software

Thanks all, yes I'm aware of the limitations of the phone HAHA.

I have got the free trial of Astro Photography Tool and will start learning that.

Per Raymo's post, I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how I could bring out more of that blue nebulosity without blowing out the red of the HI area.

Cheers,

Reg

nice effort, you should look up a tutorial on level and curve adjustment - would love to see the result afterward.

the free image program GIMP is pretty much as powerful as photoshop these day or even more, for most work cases - no trial necessary. https://www.gimp.org/

good work

cheers

Thanks, Russell, I’ll definitely do that. Will be busy for a few days but will definitely give that a try with curves and levels adjustment.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone!

That repro is on the money. Your field and guiding are good so you only need to pay attention to your focus and you'll be on your way.

Thanks, Marc! Yes I’ll try to pay more attention to focusing next clear night. I noticed that earlier subs were more in focus but later ones seemed not. I’ll have to figure out why. Maybe temperature? Ambient was about 12C at the start but dropped to around 8C by the end here.

That's correct. Temperature can play a big role depending on the type of telescope. A rag to cover it will help with temperature shifts. You can also refocus manually every 30min or so at the beginning of the night.
