Great weather for collecting calibration data

While it rains I'm halfway through my 96 hour run collecting updated bias and dark frames

The other good news is that the skies are clear in the Sierra Nevada mountains in California so data for the 5th and 6th panels of my Veil mosaic is dribbling in over Google Drive.

Hope it's clear somewhere in Oz...

Cheers,
Rick.

Been visiting the upcoming site of "Huon Ridge Observatory" (my new place in southern Tassie) - was crystal clear last night, and inky dark! Shame I haven't got my 'scopes there yet...

96 hours!!! what data are you aiming to get Rick - I guess that most of that is darks?

Ray,

I'm doing 500 bias frames and darks at 5, 10, 15 and 30 mins. The bulk of the time is a day's worth of each dark length. Possibly overkill but it's easy to do. It's only 48 of the 1800 second ones

Cheers,
Rick.

Maybe a silly question, but if you have a good master bias, can't you use dark frame scaling to reduce the number of darks you need to take? As you say though, not hard to do if you have the time.

Hi Rick
How many library bias frames do you take and how often do you replace them?
Cheers
Mark

I grab darks for my most common sub durations but I do use scaling as well, e.g. for 20 minute subs which I sometimes do for LRGB at a dark site.

Bias frames are easy so I typically take several hundred of them. This time around I got 800. Based on my camera parameters that should give me a SNR of around 6000:1 in the master bias.

I do new calibration masters when the old ones don't appear to correct so well any more and I see significant numbers of hot pixels in calibrated lights. The last time was around 8 months ago, I think.

Cheers,
Rick.
