There is also a QHY5-II due for release shortly. There's about 7 flavours of them for different jobs.

A question on the lodestar, if a bloke was to lash out on one of these what would be the one to get, the mono or the colour?

The reason I ask is can this be used for other work such as planetary imaging?

IMHO the Lodestar, although certainly usable for imaging ( see Maurice Gavin's results) is basically a dedicated "hot shot" guide camera.
Mono is the way to go.
