Deprecated constellations ?
I know constellations like Air Pump(Antlia), Printing Machine, Cat (Felis), Argo Navis, Quadrans Muralis (part of Bootes and Hercules), Fornax (part of Eridanus) used to be constellations, but are deprecated. E.g. Argo Navis is Carina, Vela and Puppis now.
But sometimes I still see names like "Mensa" (Table Mountain), "Leo Minor" or "Sextans". But these are also deprecated now, the latter two being part of Leo ?
And another strange thing: Canopus lies in the part of former "Argo Navis" which is actually Vela, so why is it called alpha Carinae and not alpha Velorum ?

Mensa, Leo Minor & Sextans are alive and well and are three on the official
IAU list of 88 constellations.

If Pluto's fate is anything to go by then those constellations will soon be demoted to asterisms by the IAU

I agree,
Skysurfer, I think you need to check your maps.
Canopus IS in Carina.

There are a lot of sloppy (wrong) names - especially in Synscan handsets and Sky Safari too.
Unfortunately the mess is proliferating faster than it is being corrected.

Exactly, but Canopus lies very close to the Puppis (not Vela as I mentioned in my OP) border.
