This the world’s largest and most modern fusion device of the stellarator type has already been working since the beginning of December 2015 with a helium plasma as preparation for the first hydrogen plasma. The objective of fusion research is to derive energy from fusion of atomic nuclei just as the sun does.

I've been watching the painfully slow progress of ITER for years... (http://www.iter.org/).

Watching the meeting now. Glad to see the Germans have at least progressed...

While an impressive engineering feat, and construction project, and a massive investment, the resulting flash of light after the Hydrogen gas 'puff' was pretty disappointing. I had been expecting steady state operation and that testing would have been completed by now.

That timelapse was amazing. What an incredibly complex piece of engineering.
