Astrology...!!!!!!

So there we were just wandering around on a nice 11 acre block about 15 minutes out of Mansfield when the real-estate agent (who was showing us the block) said to my wife...
"Of course your husband will love this block with his interest in ASTROLOGY"....
You could have heard a pin drop !!!!!!
Then my wife proceed to explain the difference between astrology and astronomy.... in no uncertain terms !!!
He was suitably chastened and rather silent for the remainder of our inspection... probably thinks he's lost the sale... we'll see.... it is a very nice block - gently sloping - up around 700 metres above sea level - nice dark skies.... could be a goer... time will tell.

I see I've been moved to "General chat"...that's O.K.... maybe if I actually buy the block and build my observatory on it (the primary reason for viewing the block) I'll get moved back to the "DIY Observatories" section....
So - that's $200 K plus for the block - around $8 K for a "bells & whistles" observatory... did I mention that his hobby could be expensive ???
cheers

Do you seriously expect a real estate agent to know the difference between astrology and astronomy?

Even 'space' has a little different connotation to an easte agent.

I don't believe in Astrology. But then again, I'm a Pisces, and Pisceans don't believe in Astrology.

the other day my mother-in-law was going on about how the reason why my wife did something was because she was a Capricorn. "typical Cap" she would repeat. My goodness. i honestly think that some people give the same weight to things like Astrology as they do the fact that the earth revolves around the Sun (or the earth sun centre of mass). they don't have any thoughts as to how each one could work, therefore they are equally mysterious and valid.

I have found many ladies I meet at the different pubs I sometimes go to for a beer with a mate when in that part of the world are into astrology. I never mention astronmy. They guess your star sign etc. Why spoil a good thing. I am a capricorn but my nature seems like something different... Oh you are on the cusp. Many times same lines.. My mates will often argue with them.. Wrong.. So I usually have company.
So yes astrology rocks and they love my photos on my phone.
I tell folk my interest is astro photography because I got sick of explaining the difference between the two.

Aww c'mon give the guy a break.

While I'm still seeing Scorpius being called "scorpio" on this very forum, I'm not complaining too much about the occasional logy-nomy perpetrated by people whom I can't even blame for their ignorance.

Let's hope he told his wife something like:

"Hey, did you know there's this massive star nursery in plain view of earth, let's go somewhere that has a telescope and check it out some time"

Rather than:

"Met this dorky couple today, who were clearly not interested in buying anything"

I gave up on correcting people on the word a few years ago. Much of the time it was friends and family asking "How are your astrology studies going?", no need to constantly correct people who are thinking astronomy but saying astrology, slip of the tongue

Mysticism is the fruit of ignorance. It can be whimsical through to dangerous. But it can also be very humane.

There is an interesting thing here for those of us not locked into the mystical aspect - the common threads that link culture and history from today all the way to many thousands of years BC. As a student of History, I look for these threads and constantly find ideas that we see as uniquely ours today being espoused by the Ancient Egyptians and the Phoenicians. And we think that we have absolutely no direct common cultural links with these extinct cultures! Yet these links are the roots of our own culture today! The language may have changed, and some of the ideas evolved, but the blood is the one and the same.

I don't have time for ditsy Astrology. But to see where we come from, it is a very useful tool.

Just a little thought to add to the discussion,
