Exclamation Apple recalls MacBook, iPad, iPhone & iPod power adapters - electric shock risk

In an article in today's Sydney Morning Herald, Technology Reporter
Hannah Francis writes that Apple has "instigated a massive international
recall of power point adapters across its range of portable devices after
a small number were found to have broken, causing risk of electric shock."

Some of the redesigned adapters are square in shape; these are understood to not be affected by the recall. If your adapter is round, as the majority of them are, you can determine whether it's affected by removing it from the power brick and checking the underside.

If there are four or five numbers printed on the inside slot where it connects to the power brick (as in the picture above) — or, conversely, nothing written there at all — you need to take it into an Apple store to be replaced.

If there is a country code written on the underside instead, e.g. AUS or EUR, then this is a newer model and is not affected.

Thanks Gary – I have 3 out of 4 offending adapters…

But, the good news is that I am still alive!

Cheers

The whole replacement program is a joke!

Once I submitted my replacements it said to print out a label and take to the post office in which they will give you a pre-paid parcel.

There was no label on any of my 3 submissions!

I took a dozen of the duck heads to the Apple Store today and they gave me a dozen new, smaller ones. No problems at all, no paperwork.

I had never seen or even heard of those adapters coming apart, but I thought what the heck, a free replacement is a free replacement

Anybody knows what exactly is a problem?

Apparently the duck heads (that clip onto the power adapter) come apart. Someone tweeted this picture about a broken Euro-style adapter: http://media.zenfs.com/en_US/News/BG...er-recall1.jpg

Not something you'd want to step on, but I've never seen this in 13 years of using Apple power adapters.
