firewall has gone down
The firewall on my new Acer laptop has gone down, and when I try to
reactivate it, the comp tells me an unexpected error occurred, so it can't
change any firewall settings, or switch it on. I'm sick and tired of W10, from
the day I got it it shuts down randomly[about once a day on average],
I presume it is doing some kind of updates. The other day it did a major update which took about an hour, and afterwards I found my Freecell
and Hearts had disappeared. Any ideas?[other than go back to my old
XP machine].

My daughter had to get a new laptop and it's win10. I set the internet connection to metered, apparently that stops all automatic updates except for critical ones and then I set the update time to between 3am and 8am. I also installed the windows shell program so the interface looks like win7. So far it's all going ok as far as I know, (she hasn't complained yet).

Mine is set on metered, and all the non critical updates stopped, but it still shuts down at least once a day, without warning, and the switch for setting the time I want upgrades done is greyed out so I can't change anything.
I think there are problems with this machine, because also Deep Sky Stacker
does stupid things, as I previously posted here.

That's not good, maybe they have put in a patch to stop people changing those settings. I was lucky and managed to get a win8 laptop, old stock clearance and was able to stop all updates, I only use it for astro so no updates needed.
