Unhappy Lenses don't bounce!

I have just taken the last picture using my Canon 70-200mm F4L IS USM lens.
I was out for a drive taking picture of my newly painted van and didn't zip up the bag when I put the lens in.
Got home, grabbed the bag off the seat and the lens fell out on the concrete driveway. Normally a fall from a car seat would not be fatal but the seat in the van is well over a metre off the ground.
The first element is broken and the body looks bent out of shape. I don;t think it's a fixer.

Geoff you maybe surprised, but to replace the front element is not really a big deal, and not that expensive, however if there is more serious damage, well that is another story.

A mate of mine bounced his 600mm F/4.0 L and did exactly as you did, and got it repaired no problems and reasonably cheap, they, these lenses are pretty tough, not to say concrete is not a good surface to drop them on.

Then of coarse, is it worth the expense of shipping and repair costs, could insurance cover it maybe.

Leon

No insurance unfortunately.
The body of the lens at the broken bit look well out of round to me but I'll measure it.
I'm not sure how good it would be after repair if that is the case. Perhaps I'll get a quote just in case ...

You are in good company. I dropped my Canon L TS-e 24mm. I wrote about it here http://forums.atomicmpc.com.au/index...howtopic=42884 and the rebuild of a 90-300mm http://www.mickyj.com/repairef90300.htm

I know that sinking feeling. It must be smash em up week.

Two days ago I was messing about with my 2 month old Pentax K-x and barely 1 month old ED80 on a photo tripod. I walked into the other room for something and heard an almighty crash. One of the tripod legs collapsed and the lot hit the floor. Looks like the Pentax took the worst of it. A big crack in the case, dust all over the prism and the auto focus is busted.

The ED80 seems okay apart from a bent focuser, but I'm sure more damage has been done that will come to light later.

Just makes me wonder why I bother.

Good grief.
I feel really lucky. Yesterday I bent over to check something and my 70-300 fell out of my case - didn't notice til later and couldn't work out where I'd dropped it - fortunately it was at my back door on the bufalo mat - no damage...

Geoff, I'd definitely get a repair quote from Canon. Those pro lenses are very repairable, I wouldn't write it off just yet.

Cheers
Steffen.

I feel your pain.
I'd send it off to Canon Sydney for a look/quote. Might cost $50 for the quote. And check out your home insurance policy, might be covered. Mine are for this sort of damage.

I agree with Troy, also check your car insurance policy, mine (GIO) has coverage for valuables that are in the car, such as cameras etc, in case they are damaged etc.

Worth checking out. If its repairable and it is covered, the repair costs would only be the excess, depending on how much that is....

I bumped my dining table one night in the dark and heard something fall over, roll to the edge and hit the floor. My Nikon 105mm macro lens. My heart sank and I went pale. It's a horrible feeling. Luckily it was fine though (nice solid metal made in Japan quality). Still until then I was toying with the idea of buying lens coats for my good lenses...this incident made up my mind. I know a lens coat won't help for big falls, but can for everyday knocks (and makes metal lenses so much easier on the hands to work with in winter).

I didn't think to check the car policy - after all it was in the car (van).

Actually it was the insurance companies fault - sort off. I'd just gotten the van back from an insurance repair and that's why I was out taking pictures

I'll dig out the policy and check. EDIT: Cover for up to $500 on personal items it damaged when the vehicle is involved in an accident or stolen. No luck there.

Hi Steffen, If it was just the lenses then I'd get a quote but the alloy body of the lense is out of shape..

It may still be worth getting a quote. Perhaps that section of the body is easily - and more importantly, cheaply - replaceable.

You'll never, never know ....

Geoff, any chance you can post some photos of the damage?
