AC Adapter for camera

My camera takes 4 AA lithium or 2 3v cr lithium, however a genuine AC adapter costs $100

Anyone have a cheaper alternative

What sort of DC plug does it have, as this will be the deciding factor. If the connector is common, then there is alternatives, but if its propriotery, then forget it.

Take a picture of it and post it. I'll let you know what can be done.

Hope the attached pictures help as far as I'm concerned $60-100 for an AC adapter is a rip off but if it can't be done I've no alternative.

Thanks

That looks like a DC 2.5mm socket. Take it to Jaycar or Dicksmith and test it against either a 2.5mm, 3mm or 2.1 mm plug.
Then use a plug pack with around 1.0 amp minimum and voltage either 6V or 7V, usually from a multiselector plugpack.

When I asked a camera shop about it they claimed you'd have to buy genuine or you may fry the camera.

Hi Trevor

I’ve got the Pentax *ist DS which takes CRV3 Li-Ion batteries which are 3V batteries.

I purchased a spare set of rechargeable Li-Ion CRV3 batteries from here – note they are stated as 3.0V.

In some (non-photo) shops, I have seen CRV3 Li-Ion batteries at a stated voltage of 3.3V and 3.6V and I have also read on a newsgroup of the potential to fry your camera if you mistakenly put a 3.6V CRV3 in the camera instead of the 3.0V CR3V.

Why they make CRV3 cells at 3.0V, 3.3V and 3.6V with the same CRV3 designation is beyond me and seems a barbaric practice!

For peace of mind, I would fork out the cash for the Pentax AC Adapter; you’ll sleep easy at nights providing you don’t have to go hungry to buy the mains adapter.

Cheers

Dennis

If the power supply is rated at 6V, there is no reason for it to fry. Saying that you could "Fry" it, would apply to anything that has a external power supply (Including original manufacturers).
The rating on the input is 6V, so as long as you dont get anything over 6V, your fine.

Its up to you, and what your willing to do.
Same as laptop chargers, get original and cost you over 150 smakaroos, but from a local electronics shope, around $50 and works perfectly.

Oh yeah, where do you think pentax gets its supplies from, designed and built in China. Just add their badge to it.

Theo.

You need to remember, the batteries will have less circuit inside the camera. The DC input will be put thru its own internal filter and regulator circuit. Plus you also have the drop across the cable from the Plugpack to the camera. This is good for at least .5V at full current load.
