HoW do they justify the price

Aliexpress $11 AUD

Similar item at well known retailer in Australia $80

I wouldn't think the materials/manufacture/source etc would be that different

Some of the reasons:

Aus importer tax, if you can't make 200% you don't bother.

The chances are that this is a factory reject of an OEM for a well known name Astro brand that is selling off units with minor paint defects or machining is slightly out of tolerance.

I don't know why you would ever want to hang that much junk off your scope but you certainly shouldn't pony up $80 for it because of Astro-markup.

Had a similar experience recently. Microtomes (or making very thin slices of cells) usually start around $200.

...or $30 on Ali Express.

I often gets bits and pieces of things from AliExpress, can often be a lot less than eBay even when vendor is in same country (maybe even same vendor?)

And that microtome sounds cheap. One of mine at work cost about $25k. Maybe I should look on AliExpress ...

Some chinese manufacturers do not need to conform with Australian laws, so they can undercut massively even below the value to produce to get load of retailers ordering. Once done they simply bump up the price.

Another method is calculating the value it would take to produce a minimum quantity than do a blanket sale and sell to anyone until they can justify it or until they get orders in to make it marketable to only work as a distributor.

Finally in my knowledge, what is quality, even under Australian law marketing has free access to over emphasise the quality of the product and their services. I forgotten the legal term when I took a course in it but it is real and there is nothing that can be done.

Overall it is a buyer risk, and Australias very tight anti-competition and weak marketing laws.

Hard to support local businesses when you know you can buy much cheaper elsewhere. They might need to be a bit more smart at what products to import and sell.

At the end of the day more money in our own pockets will always win.
