Toucam and raw images

Hi Guys,

I have read thru http://www.astrosurf.com/astrobond/ebrawe.htm and have now altered the toucam to record in raw format.

The instructions are pretty good.

I have installed the freeware image program iris http://www.astrosurf.org/buil/us/iris/iris.htm

I did a few images and videos during the day, and things went well.

The raw formats for colour were a little tricky to sort out as iris had to do the conversions and you have to work out the best camera setup ie nikon, canon etc that best mimiks the toucam, but got it going.

Now i will try it at night when the skys clear.

Iris also has a nice function called virtual equatorial that seems to be able to convert star trails into a cobined image. One to have a go at with the milky way.

Ok, will keep everyone updated!

I've tried the raw mode before on ToUcam when capturing Jupiter. I did a comparison between raw and normal and while it worked fine, I found I had to sharpen the raw mode so much to get it to how I wanted it to look, that they ended up the same anyway.

So I just use normal mode now.

Be interested to see your findings anyway.

Sounds like a great program for Dob users to get DSO's without tracking

Whoa! I read through the instructions on how to do 'Virtual Equatorial'. http://www.astrosurf.org/buil/iris/new430/new430_us.htm

A Pilots licence sounds easier to study for!! Scroll down the page and have a look at this nightmare!

yes ken, i think i will have a go at it and get back to people on that one.

I would also not recommend you converting yours to raw yet until i have made sure i do not break something!

As ice said, their won't be a lot of difference for planets unless I believe you are at very very high magnifications ( maybe with that televue 5x ). The main difference i am thinking is the dso work. I will wait and see.

Also, finding the capture software that will use the raw changes has been a long and hard process!

Any sign on good weather your way for you first touKen tests?

Hey Phil, up up & away!

Dave, no sign of clearing up yet. It's gone back to winter!!

Isn't it amazing - 7 years of drought and now it won't stop raining or drizzling.

I feel the same way about Raw files as Mike,

We obvioulsy need some guidance from an experienced raw imager.

it is easy to undo the raw mod, so i will give it a rip on stars and particualirly doubles at high mag.

see how i go with the digiscope thru the eyepieces and of couse bring it and the laptop to star camp.

if we all can't work it out, then IIS is buying the canon 350 for us toucam owners!
