Hi Les, Probably not, although your offset setting could have made some difference..... You may be able to see the image in Nebulosity if you go to the histogram and uncheck the checkbox above and drag the right side pointer of the histogram further towards the left. In effect this is stretching the histogram and should show the faint fuzzies a bit better. You will need to stack and stretch the images properly to get a final image.

As for the gain and offset settings, Craig Stark has written a very good explanation on setting and forgetting these two settings in the Nebulosity documentation available on his web site. This does take care of the most trying part of imaging with a QHY8. The rest is easy.

Hope this is of some assistance, and I hope you enjoy your new camera.

Hi Les,

I am in the same boat. QHY8 on a dedicated laptop in the obs, CCD on the back of my C8 via a Meade microfocuser then 6.3FR. All focuses OK and Neb 2.6.2 connects via ASCOM driver to QHY8.

So far the only answer I've found to the "eternal download" syndrome is to disconnect Neb and restart it. Seems like a clunky operation. I tried using EZCAP v19 but it often gives divide by zero errors, so I gave up on it.

Haven't been able to get CCDCAP to recognise the QHY8 at all, so Neb is the only one so far, and it does just like you say.

BTW, I found 48-50% gain and 114-117 offset seem to be about the ballpark for my QHY8. At least I could see M42 tonight with those settings on a 1-5 min preview shot. (I Forget the actual time).

I'll keep you informed if I have any breakthroughs.

Cheers,

I'm pretty sure Peter (pmrid) has been using his qhy8 with nebulosity since day one. Maybe he can tell you which drivers work best. It sounds like these new ascom drivers for the qhy8 are trouble with nebulosity

Don't you have a copy of maxim at all?

FWIW Les, Mike, Robin,

I had some initial trouble with Nebulosity seeing my QHY-8 too.
After getting some very helpful step by step advice via PM from
Theo and Doug I thought it was sorted
I have the latest QHY drivers and also the TDVE ASCOM(sp?)
drivers.
HOWEVER, sadly, Neb is my favourite capture program but was eventually
just far too glitchy and frustrating driving the QHY8.
One night would be fine...another night might not even see the
camera.
So I did as Theo suggested and now exclusively use EzCap (the
very latest version kindly supplied by Theo)
Works clean, no glitches. For now, this will do.

Steve, The actual system drivers are now done by qhy and tom only does the acsom interface. Maybe the pre ascom drivers would work ok.

I found some old original drivers from my qhy8.

These are dated 12/5/2009, 11meg.

Yeah thanks Robin, just realised that and fixed my post
Re: the older drivers, I'll just keep this set mate and maybe give it
another crack on a cloudy night.
cheers,

Steve

A quick question Steve, which version of EZCAP? I downloaded V19x64 from Tom's website when I downloaded the QHY8drv64 and QHY8drv and QHY8ASCOMsetup drivers.

I presume that now we must use the ASCOM driver, as well as the 64 bit windows driver? It still is confusing, especially since the drivers are not named with a version #.......

As I mentioned in my earlier post, EZCAP gives occasional divide by zero errors and always an error when I exit. This is on a stock standard Dell Inspiron laptop with latest Intel 945gm graphics driver. CCDCAP of course refuses to see the QHY at all.

I might have to try Robin's old drivers, or move to Maxim. Another learning curve. Sigh.

Cheers,

Mike,

the version Theo sent me is EzCap v1.8
2010-1-4

Maybe it's not the latest? There is a ver 1.9 I believe.
However it runs fine. I don't get the divide by zero errors while
it's running but I do get the error you mention on exit.
Simply turning OFF any live view checkbox then unclicking
the QHY8 selected in the menu...then exit stopped this.
