Hot new NIKON lens

Any Nikon nuts out there will be veeeery excited about the new AFS-Nikkor 24-70 mm f/2.8 ED G zoom lens. Its a pro design & Im having sleepless nights in anticipation of its release Need a couple of excellent reviews before I sell one of the children to finance it
Early reports say it'll be a replacement for the venerable built-like-a-tank 28-70 f2.8

Robin - will this lens focus as advertised on my D40? Being built for a full-frame sensor would it be a waste of time? I'm looking at a way to consolidate all 12 of my Nikon Ai lenses into two VR's - a wide-angle to around 70 mm and then another from there to 200. I'd like to know that they'll also work (manually of course) on my Nikon F and EL. One day I might also entertain going the whole hog and see how a D3 or D300 might fit into the finances.....

It should focus on your D40 no probs. Coming in at around 900 grams,It might feel pretty weighty mind you but weight to me equates to a solid, built-like-a-tank lens. (Like my current 17-55 f2.8) It incorporates the latest silent wave motor so it should simply snap into focus.
Being built for a full frame sensor, you'll need to assess your shooting requirements. On the DX sensor, it'll give you a 36-105mm lens. Naturally on a full frame sensor, it'll be 24-70. The D300 is still a DX sensor whereas the D3 will be full frame. I rarely go under 17mm & most of my work is in the 17-200 mm zone. However, the D300 will likely be around the D200 price when it was introduced...Im thinking somewhere in the $2200-$2400 price. (This will drop after a year or two as did thew D200) The D3, being a flagship model, will be closer to the D2XS...say around $4600-$5000. I'll be getting a D300 as soon as there available to compliment my 2 D200's. As for working on an F or EL, im not sure at this stage. Theres also a very nice looking 14-24 being introduced at the same time as the 24-70 so who knows...maybe you can go 24-24, 24-70, 70-200 if the finances hold up

i am still struggling to imagine having 2 x D200 and a D300.

why not consolidate all of your cameras and buy 1 x D3?

cheers,

Ha! Why have 2 D200's? Because I shoot an awful lot of stuff.( or should that be, a lot of awful stuff) I need 2 bodies for my work. I need to have a redundancy contingency plan. That is, if one dies, breaks down, malfunctions or is dropped(and cameras DO get dropped), then Im still in business with my other one. For the price of one D2XS or D3, I can have 2 cameras that do almost exactly what their big brothers do. Lastly, having 2 bodies means that I hardly change lenses at all therefore reducing sensor dust.

at first I had a mental image of two robins with a camera each not two camera bodies.

Since "my" D80 is actually my wife's perhaps i should invest in my own DSLR. Your comments on dropping cameras and sensor dust may give me the excuse i need. My wife is always worried when I have the camera in my hand or on the tripod- I am a bit clumsy...

cheers,

I really honestly don't like the design. Should be a pretty darn good lens though

A photo opportunity doesn't always wait for a lens change, so having 2 cameras with different lenses can make the difference between a good shot and no shot at all.
