I have a little while to go, but the 5-10k bracket is getting closer.
A CCD cam will get me there.

Oh, and for any shifty-types doing some window shopping... you know that Men At Work song? Land Down Under? .... "six foot four and full of muscle"

I'm a pretty honest bloke. If I could have altered the original poll response from myself, then I'd have done so without admitting it in the thread.

As to the safety of posting how much I've spent, my name isn't on the voting roll (silent voter). Neither are my parents. We're not listed in the phone book too either. If someone was to burgle our play, it'd be a random one, and God help them. Manfrotto tripods (and monopods) hurt a LOT. And if they get cute, I'll just sick my rats onto them

The real question should be how much have you spent on your astronomy gear

I did a quick add up for the last 20 years and it does come to more than $100000.

What's it worth now. I suppose I could get about $5000 if some sucker came along.

If you need it bad enough to steal it from me well Good Luck! I know some very nasty people who owe me favours.

3. As to the original thread, I have spent far too much for the frustration it has bought. Who pays for grief? Would be much less stressful watching TV every night (but mostly not as enjoyable). Thinking about it that's what I mostly do anyway because of the weather here

Well when I last posted i was only a mid range 1-5k man.

this has changed quite significately now and if the next six months goes to plan.

hehehehe. But at the moment im in the 5-10K and I use every single bit of my kit on a regular basis (weather permitting).

But like my family tells me that in the grand scheme of things whats 20k worth of astronomy equipment that has a very good resale value (if selected and looked after correctly). Nothing really, as this hobby isn't a money pit at all it is in my opinion it is very cheap and satisfying.

Further to this, it is family friendly, Mr Plod approved and given the right circumstance very sociable or in others almost like meditation! I had a zen like moment just the other night sitting 3hrs out of Perth in a field with 20 grey Kangaroos having my dinner waiting for the darkness to come over. Once it did and everything was going, i was having a sip of 12yo Galway Pipe port and some nice Lindt dark chocolate completely alone.... doesn't get much more relaxing than that my friends.

Frankly, if I won Lotto, not that I am lucky, I would end up spending much of it on some really really fine equipment, retire to the country and die looking at the stars.

Yes, frustration but also satisfaction of conquering a technical challenge. The greatest reward comes from the more difficult challenges. I'm nearish retirement and in a crap job, no prospects or real value so I see it as an ongoing 'project' that keeps me mentally active and engaged. Probably spend more time at work thinking my way round ideas and solutions astronomically than real 'work'. (and posting on here

There is no price on that kind of reward. I'll be up in the $10k-$15k area by the time I start getting decent results I reckon.

Could be worse, I was going to go serious on motorsports and you can blow $10-S15k on one event

... anyone want to buy a turbo hatch club car ? Cheap ?

For me it is great to be able to converse with others on here that enjoy looking up at night. If the amount spent brings happiness then the rewards cannot be summed up in $$$ terms. I would much rather rub shoulders with who ever spent many thousands on here, than the poor individual that has put the same amount through a Pokie machine, and devastate their life and others around them.

So I really mean it when I say "all the best".
