New Vixen Hr 3.4mm coming soon!

For people with plenty of eye floaters look away now!
Looks like another one in the line up a lot have been waiting for.

Vixen high resolution 3.4mm eyepiece for planetary / double star work.
Fov 42 deg , 10mm eye relief - the same as the Hr 2.4mm
Only 5 elements in 3 groups
The 2.4mm has had some very good reports back, some say as sharp and brighter than the 2.58 XO but with more eye relief.
Should suit f7-f8 scopes without having too much magnification.

Have to start saving now

Got the 3.3mm Takahashi T.O.E Ortho..which is Taks answer to the Vixen HR..and it is my best ever EP...So can guess the Vixen should be superb!

Would be great to compare the two when the HR 3.4 is available .

The whole range is on special at the mo for $239 US from Agena Astro discounted down from $279 (back order for the 3.4mm until mid April)

An interesting cross section of the HR 1.6mm?

You can see where some of your money goes with the grinding and configuration of the lenses used for such a high magnification eyepiece.

Interesting... 5 elements in 2,2,1 configuration with the first two as a Smyth lens, and looking similar to the old LV.

Should be interesting to try one in my little APO.

New kid on the block arrived today! HR 2.4mm

Interesting to see how it performs in my short refractors f4.5, f5.3 and f8?
Looking forward to this over the next couple of months.
Eye relief seems to be on par with the le's if not just a tad longer.

I'm still puzzled as to what scopes Vixen intend these to be used with.

Such short focal lengths only make any sense in fast reflectors (f/4 and under). But... very fast reflectors usually have relatively poor surface figure and whopping secondary mirror obstructions, which mean they are poor performers at high power.

Even at f/5, the 2.4mm will give X2 per mm, which is too high for most reflectors, and no-one makes f/4 APO refractors.

And does anyone really need X3 per mm ? I doubt it...

A 3.4mm is at least sensible as it would suit f/7 APO refractors that can usefully handle X2 per mm.

I think your right Wavy,

Definetly a specialised eyepiece .
I thought I would give it a try for my Fsq 85edx mainly.
Flat field, not over the top magnification and decent eye relief. -F5.3 = 187x mag
Barlows introduce to much glass in the equation (dim the view)
Only really useful on moon, double stars and planets though.
Doesn't hurt to try!

I think it ticks all the boxes for this scope.

First light with my Vixen HR 2.4mm

With a near full moon I decided to try out the new eyepiece on the lunar limb.
Seeing at first was average with very few moments good seeing.
A slight shimmering effect from the atmosphere was present most of the time.
When the viewing was good the detail from this eyepiece was amazing, shadows from the crater walls to the cliff faces produced so much detail and very sharp. Very impressed, a very easy to use eyepiece and good eye relief. A slightly critical eye placement is required over the Tak 5mm Le and being a smaller eyepiece it was expected. No monsters present either. Unfortunately Jupiter and its moons were too low in the sky which made the conditions worse.
Looking forward to the new Vixen HR3.4 my Tsa102 when available , should produce about the same exit pupil as the 2.4mm I my Fsq, with extra magnification to boot.

Received my vixen Hr 3.4mm last week, unfortunately haven't had a chance to use it as yet, Friday night here looks to be a cracker though.
The hr 2.4mm is a very sharp and has good contrast so hopefully the 3.4mm performs as well!
Usability against my other "planetary" eyepieces is very good (atmosphere conditions permitting) and I found that it is actually more comfortable and easier to use than my 9mm Tak ortho. Go figure.
Eye relief measures only 7mm in the ortho!
