Jupiter animation of 39 Frames, with GRS and Europa. Brisbane 21/22 Apr 2018.

We had a clear spell in Brisbane on the evening of Sat/Sun 21/22 Apr 2018, although the seeing was quite variable, estimated to be between 3-5/10 on the Pickering Scale. The last JPG file shows the seeing at its worst.

I grabbed 39 sets of RGB data, 30 sec each filter with a pause of 210 secs between sets, spanning 11:50pm (21st) to 03:15am (22nd) with Jupiter transiting the Meridian at 01:07 am (AEST).

Jupiter Animation on PVOL site. WARNING 2.5MB.

South is at the top of the animation.

Diameter=44.21".
Magnitude=-2.47.
Date(UT)=21042018.
Start(UT)=135005.153.
End(UT)=171542.914.

Equipment Details:
Tak Mewlon 210 F11.5.
TeleVue 2” PowerMate x2.0.
Camera=ZWO ASI290MM.
SX USB Filterwheel.
R=30 sec.
G=30 sec.
B=30 sec.
Pause=210 sec.
39 RGB sets.

Focal Length=4830mm.
Resolution=0.12".

Altitude:
Start = 78 deg (E).
End = 57 deg (W).

Seeing:
Variable from 3 to 5 Pickering Scale.

That's a fine set of images despite the seeing, must be the quality of the scope and processing to get that result, lovely detail.
Was out imaging Jupiter at the same time in what I'd call 7-8 /10 seeing, was quite steady, using an 8" f6 newt, 2.5 Powermate, on an EQ6 but the mount has issues so my results are nowhere as finely detailed as yours.

Thanks for your comments Jeff, I appreciate them.

I’m still a little uncertain when it comes to estimating the seeing, so I slew to a bright star e.g. Spica and compare what I am seeing to the images on Damien Peach’s website and go from there. In particular, I find his descriptions such as “Arcs of diffraction rings sometimes seen” help provide a bit of objectivity.

The ‘scope was mounted on my EM200 mount and I was autoguiding through a WO 66mm Petzval. With this set up, Jupiter would remain more or less centred in the 4x2 arcmin FOV for each batch of x10 RGB captures of R=30 G=30 B=30 secs with a 210 sec interval between sets.

I think the biggest upgrade has been going from the ASI 120MM-S where I was getting frame rates of around 20-25fps to the ASI 290MM where I am now getting around 60fps. The increased sensitivity of the ASI 290MM is quite noticeable.

I think that these factors really do help when the seeing is marginal.

Cheers

Should have added that I use an ASI 290mc, maybe the extra detail is really gained by RGB imaging but don't want to go down that path. Was getting a frame rate of 90fps at 800 X 600 but detail was still smeared.
Still impressed with your images as I am with many others who post on here.

Thanks for that Jeff, I was going to get the 290MC but as I already had a filter wheel, I decided to risk the mono. It was a little daunting to start with but once I understood the process and the various apps to use, things began to gradually fall into place.

With the 290MM I was getting around 2500 frames in 30 secs and stacked 25% using Autostakkert2!

I used Registax 6 for Wavelets Sharpening and I still marvel at what pops out of the somewhat soft input image.

I assemble the RGB frames in CCDStack and then finish in Photoshop, so it can be a bit of a long haul before you get to the final result.

I think that all the small, incremental gains using these sensitive cameras with amazing apps such as FireCapture, AS!2, Registax and PS really helps exploit those lucky moments, even when the seeing is less than optimal.

Cheers

Dennis I am always amazed at what you achieve with that scope.Thats a great animation especially with the moon.

Nice one. Love transits. Adds a 3D feel to the pics.
First time I looked at Jup visually there were two moon shadows on it and I first thought I had something on my eyepiece.

Thanks Stuart & Marc, I appreciate your comments.

Apart from the seeing dropping off as the early morning crept up, the main challenge was having just 210 secs to do a Meridian flip, acquire the field, acquire a guide star, start auto guiding and then kicking FireCapture off again to grab more AVI’s.

It’s a real shame that the worst seeing was when Europa’s shadow began to creep across the Jovian disc.

Cheers
