Sydney Sky Star Identity?

Does any one know what is this very bright star to the north-west of the sky in Sydney, it's low in the sky and alone.

Hi John,

Welcome to Ice in Space.

That star is not actually a star, its more likely Venus which is the brightest object in the sky in the early evening, or Jupiter.

My guess is Venus due to its intensity.

Have a search here for the word "conjunction" to see some lovely photos of the moon, Jupiter and Venus which has occurred in the last few weeks.

Cheers

Chris

John ... .yes, as Chris says, its the bright planet Venus.

Her is an image from stellarium (great and free astronomical software which shows you what the objects are in your sky www.stellarium.org )

Venus has been looking fantastic in the early evening. My kids ask me 'what's that daddy?' I always enjoy telling them.
If you have an iPad there are some fantastic apps where you just point the iPad at the sky and it will show you what you're looking at. I haven't used Stellarium, but I have another app which behaves the way I mentioned.

It's most likely Venus. Have a look at it in binoculars or a telescope. If it shows up as a "Phase" its definiantly Venus.
