Geminids meteor shower today/tomorrow
Hey all,
Tonight and tomorrow, the Geminids will be showering the skies above.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-12-1...firmed/5965486
In Melbourne 11pm is best, up north a bit earlier, eg. Brisbane 9pm (See article).
Might head up to the local park (which has a small hill with good visibility) at around 11.

(btw, First post, whee!)

I saw a few very nice ones last night. Quite slow moving and bright. They did not seem to be coming from the radiant so might just have been background not Geminids. Totaly clouded over now in Adelaide hills but I hope the sky's are clear for you😀

Hi All,
Novice question, but could anyone please tell me the co-ords and the time to look at in Sydney. Stayed up till 1:30am last night but only saw one meteore and that too no where close to gemini.

Was pretty disappointed myself, though I observed only from home so faint meteors would have gone unobserved

A total disappointment . My wife & I had a perfect clear sky & position on our Verandah from 11 p.m to 1.00 saw 4. I went out again at 2.30am and the Moon had risen, washing out the night sky. May try again tonight but cloud is the forecast.

I had a look at 4 am this morning. Saw 19 in about 1/2 an hour, two of which were in other parts of the sky and therefore probably not part of the main shower. I also saw the biggest brightest satellite I've ever seen as well as a nice satellite flare from another.
Well worth getting up early!

Yeah disappointing for me too. In Melbourne the light pollution is pretty bad, could barely see Pollux at 11.30. I saw one meteor but it was overhead where visibility is half ok. Maybe tonight will be better, but clouds are rolling in...

The Geminids Meteor shower is producing a good number of Bright Meteors out here in Western Qld. I saw 14 in a 1/2 period at 3 am this morning. Looking again tonight (Sunday 14th) from 11pm & hope to see more before the moon rises.

Last night was quite good here in WA. Went east an hour and a few crew and myself had shooting stars all night. One was a real beauty shooting from almost horizon to horizon before burning up. Wows from everyone and one of the highlights of the night.

Gemini will be due north at about 03:00 DST. It rises in the NE at around 22:45 and sets in the NW at around 07:40.
Meteor showers are usually best between midnight and astronomical twilight which now is at about 4am.
Just because the radiant is in Gemini that does not mean that is the only place you'll see them. Any meteor that shows up as a streak pointing away from Gemini will almost certainly be a Geminid.

I saw about a dozen good meteors before clouds rolled in, also what might've been a fireball light up the Eastern horizon.
Nothing compared to the 2001 Leonids though...

I could not manage to get up when I woke at 2 this morning (I have work at 6 !) but I did go out for a look just after 4 and saw one straight away. Then another bright one soon after, against the gathering dawn. Saw the space station too boot :-) I hope someone else out there got to see heaps last night as it looked quite active this morning.

Mixed weather here, but I walked outside for a few minutes at 10 pm and saw 4 within 5 minutes, including 2 nice fiery ones. I gave up as clouds started coming over again.

I watched it for 2 1/2 hours after about 11pm. I saw very few at first and then the odd small one. Then I saw a quite bright one and a meteor that went very slowly and was reasonably bright.
All in all they came in patches, nothing for 5-10minutes then 3 close together. Like waves at the beach.
The best one was a very bright fireball around 1am. That was worth it as it was the brightest meteor my wife and myself have ever seen.
I didn't have to travel - just look out from my rear deck. Very comfortable except for the odd mossie! A nice temperature too.
Overall I saw about 30-35 meteors over 2.5 hours.
Greg.
