2nd lens for 40D

Here's one that's likely to stir a little debate...which is exactly what I'm looking for

I'm heading to NZ later this year for a three-week break. I'll be self-driving around the South Island...early Winter.

I'm taking the 40D with me with the 17-85mm f4-5.6 ISM lens, but I'd like to equip myself with a second lens.

Given that much of my shots will be landscape in nature, what would you recommend as a second lens given I've already got the 17-85 on board?

Or do you reckon the 17-85 is enough?

Cheers.

Matt,

Given that you'll be predominantly shooting landscapes, I don't think you would do any better than the focal length you have included in that zoom.

If you can get away with splurging on a 70-200 f/4L IS USM, you'd do pretty well.

Which lenses will you be 'packing' when you head-off to NZ?

Matt,

The 5D Mark II, the 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, 50mm f/1.2L, and the 200mm f/2.8L.

I'll see if I can squeeze in a 16-35mm f/2.8L II, or a cheaper 17-40mm f/4L for landscapes.

Regards,
Humayun

I've been doing a little research into L Series lenses and I really like the look of the 17-40 f/4.

But I'd also really like something a little faster and wider like the 16-35 F/2.8L...

I know I've got these focal lengths pretty much covered with the 17-85....but hey....it's no L Series, not in terms of sharpness, contrast etc ...and hey, those L lenses are just so purrrrrrdy!!!!

Matt, if most of your shots are going to be Landscape, then I'd go for either the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 USM or Tokina 12-24 F4 DX. You can never have too wide a lens for landscape work. The Tokina will be a lot cheaper than the Canon but is comparable optically, the 10-22 being that little bit wider. If you can fit them in, it would also be worth taking a tripod and some filters (particularly ND and polarising). Here is review by Bob Atkins of the Tokina with reference to the Canon 10-22 as a comparison.

The 17-85 will probably be fine for landscape shots in NZ.
In NZ my wife took some great shots with her Nikon 18-200 lens when we went hiking on the south island, as well as great shots in Nepal with that same lens.

Having said that, the Tokina 12-24 would be a nice addition depending upon where you go and what you do.

My wife has done two trips to nepal and on the second trip did NOT use her Tokina 12-24 for Nikon (nice lens- very solid), rather preferring to use her 18-200 only (too much dust around to change lenses). I really missed the extra wide shots the 12-24 produced.

Of course, it depends upon where you will be going on the south island. are you just driving around, and popping in and out of the mountains, or will you be going on hikes? I think you would get more out of the 12-24mm lens if you are out in the mountains.

just my $0.20 worth.
