5DMkIII real world astrophotography?

Hi all,

Can anyone point me to examples of real world long exposure photographs taken with the Canon 5D MK III yet? I'm having trouble finding any examples on the web, which is a bit surprising after a few weeks of it being out there.

Ideally I'm looking to compare 5D Mk II and III results but otherwise am just interested in RAW 100% views of results from the 5DMkIII

Thanks,
Roger.

Hi Roger,
If you are on Google+ there is a landscape astrophotographers circle https://plus.google.com/117178975214...ts/G9s5GrQPCZs (that I am humbled to be included in) that I know has a few people who are shooting with the new Mk III and posting their images there. Randy Halverson https://plus.google.com/115274420552571826637/posts is one that I can think of off the top of my head who has posted a lot of recent Mk III images.
Cheers
Greg

I'll let you know after this weekend.

I have a wedding down the coast, and, after the gig will be hitting the coastline.

I usually trust the reviews from this mob ...

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/R...ra-Review.aspx

but the noise comparison there between 5D II and III shows less difference than I'd expected based on other photographs shown previously.

So I am keen to see results.

Thanks, there's some interesting examples there.

Yep, I like his reviews too - they tend to match my personal experience quite closely. It's very interesting to see that under strict, controlled conditions with both the 5DmkII and mkIII the actual high ISO improvement only looks to be about 2/3 of a stop.

That being said, the thought of so many cross-type and dual cross-type AF sensors has me drooling When shooting at f/1.2, I find that only the 5DmkII's centre AF point is usable... it's actually faster for me to focus using the centre point, recompose, and shoot 3 frames with focus bracketing than it is to wait for a peripheral focus sensor to do its thing

G'day guys,

In case you're still interested I've uploaded some comparison raw files from some tests I did a couple of weeks ago. Like Roger I wanted to see some real world astro landscape comparisons at high iso so I hired a 5D3.

Both 5D2 and 5D3 were shooting the same scene with same brand lens. Small differences in star sharpness are due to variation in lenses and focus rather than cameras.

Overall, I'd have to concur with the other people saying 5D3 is around 2/3 of a stop better (RAW). Also, quality of noise is better with less red in the colour noise.

Cheers
Colin

hi colin

could you export some jpgs for those of us not setup to deal with 5D3 raw files yet.. would love to see your results.

Thanks for taking the time to do those Colin, much appreciated.

There certainly isn't the difference I was expecting to see when the MK III was first released.

I have been playing with my hired 5D MK III tonight, doing exposures mainly between 30s and 120s. I'm still getting used to the camera. The results haven't been breath taking but undoubtably are an improvement over my 7D. The decision is not leaping out at me at this stage, have some more work to do I think.

I did these in DPP with all settings zeroed. They don't show the structure of the noise as well as viewing the raws directly in DPP though. The most obvious improvement is less reds in the noise, you can see that best in the dark hills in the distance. Not sure I can put a figure on overall improvement though. Just looking at the raws maybe 1/2 a stop overall is a better estimate? Interested to know what others think?

Roger, I didn't go beyond 20s, so interested to see what you get in your longer shots.

Greg, it's a different one...the extra 'JPEG' in the name is hidden until it starts downloading. Sorry for the size...probably should have compressed the jpegs down a bit.

thanks Colin!

having maintained realistic expectations about how much an already great sensor could be improved, i'm impressed with what Canon have been able to do. the reduction in red noise is quite nice to see.. will help maintain colour balance in the images/timelapse etc. i think your estimate of 1/2 stop is reasonable.. but with the different noise characteristics it is very subjective as you suggest. i think the improved autofocus will make a much bigger difference to my (very) occasional bird photography though!

i should have expected that H . but don't worry.. i'm planning on giving it a try when i get back home eventually! am very interested to see what the lens corrections can do to star quality at f1.4! my main problem at the moment is that i'm only travelling with a netbook.. raw files are hard work whatever the software!

I've spent the weekend using my hired 5D Mk3 as much as I could, which wasn't lots but was a reasonable variety of tasks.

Astrophotography... here's a 2 minute 3200 ISO CR2 and JPG:
http://www.astrophotography.com.au/u...3/0C7A8086.CR2
http://www.astrophotography.com.au/u...3/0C7A8086.JPG

The JPG is batched out of DPP without any adjustments other than to set to daylight WB. So there is noise reduction applied as per defaults of the camera.

I did use ICNR. I was looking to compare to what I normally do with the 7D and as such used settings like ICNR.

It was a cool night, approx 13 degrees C. So noise will have been not at its worst by a long shot.

The location was from my patio so reasonably light polluted.

Roger.
