Help!, My New Atik 314E - is it colour or mono?

OK. I am probably going to get hell for this, but here goes.

So, I am getting jack of the DSLR coolerbox dumbbell weight and rigmarole that goes with setting it up and only cooling to 15 deg C on a hot night and decided to splurge on a cooled OSC CCD camera. Went out and bought myself an Atik 314E today, asked for a colour one, thought I got a colour one, but it only seems to capture in mono?

I have tried everything in Artemis Capture and all that comes out is mono....

When I put the lens cap on and take a dark with "color" selected rather than RAW or Luminance, it looks like I can see colour noise on the screen, however, when I have the camera pointed through my 50mm finder guider at a well lit window about 50 metres away which has a warm yellow light, it shows up as monochrome only?

Have I been given a mono camera instead of a colour one? The sticker shows it as Atik 314E CCD camera. Should it read Atik 314E - C?

I have tried debayering using Nebulosity and DSS using the RGGB matrix (found this reference on CN) but this doesnt work either. I think I have a mono camera and I will have to go tomorrow and take it back for a colour one as the thought of filter wheels (cost, time and stuffing around) just aint my thing.....

I've even used the Artemis RGB utility and it doesnt show colour either.....

Does anyone know how I can tell from the camera front, back or sensor? Does anyone have one or previously had one and can remember if it was labelled ATIK 314e - C or something else?

Cheers

Chris

When I open a Fits file captured by the camera into Gimp, it reports it as Greyscale.....I think I have a mono cam.....although if its Fits "raw" then it might just be reported as such.... I dont know anymore, its confusing

Hmmm, strange that the "colour" setting with a dark frame shows some noisy colour looking pixels, not sure where they come from as I even put a RED blank page on my screen of my PC and captured that, no colour showed up.

May have to call the shop tomorrow and see if somehow they gave me a mono cam when it should have been colour......

Frustrating.

Cheers

Chris

Load file directly into DSS. In DSS go to settings and select OSC Bayer etc.

You do have colour, but channels not visible until you let software work out / assign the RGB channels from the data

I've done that Logan,

I have tried the RGGB matrix and pretty much every other setting on there.

And yes, its in the FITS section of the settings. Nada, Zip, nuthin.

When I loaded bayered RAW files into say, Nebulosity from the DSLR, I can see the checkerboard type pattern on the monochrome RAW file, so I know its bayered, however, with images out of the Atik, its clean and smooth and no debayering options reveal any colour.

Even the FITS headers show no RGB coding in that column.....

Very strange

Chris

I have uploaded a few pics of the neighbour's window through the 50mm finder guider.

The light coming from there was a warm yellow.

The fits files are here.

Hope someone can shed some light on this....

Chris,

My 314e states on the sticker attached to the rear of the camera: Atik 314E color CCD camera - made in Portugal!

A bit of a moot point now, thanks for the info everyone, I took it back as it WAS a mono one ( early stock had no mono or color written on them) and "upgraded" it to a 314L+ instead, so watch this space, literally, as I am hoping tonight will be clear and first light will be imminent

Cheers

Chris,
I use the ATiK314L+ under AA5 for all the "serious" spectroscopy...
The mono version is well regarded.
