I am in Sydney and been out trying to find the Seagull Nebula thru my 80 mm binos... No luck so far so I ask can I hope to see this object with the binos or is it impossible given the sky glow?

You certainly have some serious binos.
Can you rig up a camera on one side?

Guessing here, but on a really clear night, and the binos supported somehow, you may be able to see it, however I doubt it.

As an example, through my 85mm scope I can't see faint nebula at all, until after a few minutes exposure.
And even then I use high gain to find and centre.

I haven't done it yet, but I am prepared to NOT see the Seagull properly until after all the processing.

Way to choose a difficult target! so big but diffuse, no way I could have imaged this back home. Taken merely hours ago at wyaralong dam. 18x 300min on unity gain using asi1600mc-c.

Incredibly good.
Great colour, good focus...
You have nailed it!

Just learn how to do Mosaics now.

ps: 300min exposures are a bit long :-)

I might have said something about success and failures.

Yesterday I hopped in the van being frustrated with the cloud parked over my house.
I drove out west for 5 hours and the cloud followed me. It didn't matter how fast I drove, the cloud kept up.
So being sneaky, I turned south and headed up on top of the main range.
Beautiful clear blue sky and that cloud was way of in the distance. I had lost it!
So I set up.
Had a cold beer, dinner and a quick afternoon nap.
Then I looked up...
You have got to be kidding! The cloud found me and this time it came in low for a full frontal attack. It actually started to rain.

So I packed up and drove home without so much as a happy snap.
And it rained all the way home.

Sorry to hear so much effort went unrewarded.
I go North to morrow it should follow me now so you may get a chance.
Good luck.

Definitely not a target for an unmodded camera, just not picking up much red at all. Even after an hours worth of 2min subs @iso1600 and the 10" newt, it's only just picking up the gulls head. Time to get the screwdrivers out and rip that IR filter out of my canon (or buy one of those asi1600mc's)

Nevertheless a decent image Rick.
I dont think I will even bother I thought the eight inch might do it but I think I will go something else if the clouds allow.
Good image.

Thanks Alex, there are plenty of objects that are within the capabilities of an unmodded dslr, faint emission nebulas are not.

Good one Rick

I think it's a great image and achievement.

It doesn't hurt to push the limits, that's how we learn.

And as to a cooled camera, start saving! Definitely worth the expense.

Interesting to see Rick. And that's a beautiful sharp shot.
Let Gary Honis lead the way. I found his mod instructions excellent when I did my 550D

Thanks Chris, I've got guiding and focus down pat, just not getting all the data. Funny that you mention Gary Honis, I have his screw sheet on my desk and a spare 1100d ready to pull apart. Lots of screws and ribbon cables but the process looks simple enough.

Careful with those ribbon cables....take extra care! Some good quality soft tip tweezers and very steady/gentle hand is required.

I sent a 550D to heaven because of one of those pesky cables.

+1 about the ribbon cables. Make sure you have all the tools described. I had one of this plastic flippy things (technical term) that you use to fix mobile phones etc. Really useful for the cables etc. Or a guitar pic

Edit: got my first good weather to start tonight!!

Finally one clear night.
The first and last 'guided' image from the 12" reflector.
This required balancing and collimation at the specific attitude.
A total hassle.

This scope has f/5 focal ratio and the FOV is 30' by 40'.
As such could only capture the head.

The mirror is badly corroded so I was happy for anything.

30 of 240sec subs. (120 min)
20 darks, bias and flats

Great to see you got a result, and it's not too shabby at that. Sounds like a bit of work to control that beast.
I guess that's why people steer away from truss tube and collapsible dobs as eq imaging conversions.
My 10" is a solid tube and easy to slide up and down and rotate to tweak the balance if needed. Collimation changing I'm not sure about, my 10" is stable in all orientations, but I do have the mirror firm in its cell and use a long (beefed up) dovetail bar to keep the tube rings wide apart.
