Hey Doug I had a look down the list of Canon Cameras and there is one there listed as Canon 5 Body, do you reckon they missed the D, as it is selling for 250 bucks.

Someone here had one of those Tamron 300mm f/2.8 here not so long ago , can't recall how it shaped up as an astroimaging lens .

I'd like one (or the Canon one (even second hand these are outside my budget range)), but I don't really want to be so limited as I would be by spending that kind of money on a fixed focal length telephoto, would rather have a zoom that has plenty of range and is therefore very versatile.

Got that kind of money set aside , but am in no rush to buy a lens , prepared to wait for a better price on the one I want.

Up until I recently bought the Canon 300 F/2.8L I had a Tokina 300 F/2.8 that was very similar in design to the tamron... For deep sky imaging, these lenses are incredible... Yes they are restrictive being a non zoom, but for me, when im terrestrial imaging, I always use 2 bodies anyway, with 2 different lenses...

Most recently I've been using my 1D mkIII with 500mm F/4L and 40D with 300 F/2.8 for wildlife photography... I think primes are the way to go if you're after sheer image quality. Zooms are convienient as walk around lenses as they offer flexibillity, however I've never really had the need for flexibility in a telephoto... I use short zooms every now and then.. 10-22/17-40/16-35, as wider shots you regularly wish you had just a bit more length or a bit wider view... but if you're shopping for a longer lens, primes generally win out in both price and image quality.

For 2500 the Tamron 300 F/2.8 is a pretty good deal... Although you can get the Sigma 300 F/2.8 for $3500 new... 1k for a warranty and guaranteed "as new" condition.. is pretty cheap

Hi all, I've got an older Tamron 300/F2.8 it was for film and as long as you stopped it down to f4 it is ok. I saw it cheap so I couldn't not get it, now it's one of my projects in a long queue. At this rate I'll have to give up work so I can get more time for my hobbies. My has a adaptall-2 mount trying to find one for Nikon, as I have only got one for M42. I also got on order from ATS a Sbig Nikon adaptor, so at some point I should be able to do some wide narrow band imaging. I have plans to use it with my Schmidt camera as part of a sky patrol, but you know how it is.

I know JPM off the QHYCCD/Cloudy Nights forums has a Tokina 300 F/2.8 the same as my old one... he's taken many many fantastic images, and secured 2 APOD's with it too... His has proven to be EXTREMELY good for imaging... pinpoint stars across the full field of the QHY8 chip, extremely sharp @ F/2.8...

They cant be beat for a supreme wide field imaging lens... Just look at Bert/Scotts work with Berts 300 F/2.8... They are godly lenses...

(Im still yet to let my 500 F/4L loose on the stars (I dont like the idea of it being mounted on the scope through all hours of the night... My baby might get damp..... or catch a cold... No!!.. it spends the night in bed with me )

Hmmm, I purchased my Canon 400mm F5.6L brand new, for less than that amount, when the A$ was around 95c to the US$.

Cheers

At the moment, the Canon 400mm F5.6L costs $1899 new from Discount Digital Photographics. Mine was in the mid $1400’s when I acquired it from their Brisbane outlet in June this year - it is a so called “grey import”. It's a gorgeous lens!

Cheers
