Hi Martin, if you're on facebook, go to our page, I've listed lots of details there of eastern times for ingress & egress of both shadow and transit, also GRS will compete for showstopper at the same time !
Three events in one.... what a show!

Hi Suzy,

Thanks for the info but I don’t use Facebook

I’m already set up down at my holiday house 220km south of Sydney ( good semi dark site )

10” push newt dob out the front and 6” f6 newt reflector on HEQ5 mount out the back ( also set up to do some DSLR imaging )

My next door neighbours are coming in to have a look ( first time looking into a telescope)

I’m surprised there wasn’t more news about the transit

Cheers

Hi again Martin,
Enjoy your night, so great you were able to get others around you involved.
Show them Saturn! They will never forget their first Saturn experience!

Here are the details ......................

HEADS UP TONIGHT! Wednesday 9th May.

Jupiter at opposition + Europa transit + GRS transit.
Opposition is the best time to see the king of planets at its brightest and closest to Earth. Aside from Venus and the Moon it'll be the brightest object in the evening sky rising in the east.
Europa Transit - Times in AEST:
21:21 Shadow Ingress
21:22 Transit Ingress
23:31 Transit Egress
23:36 Shadow Egress

Eastern Australia will also enjoy the Great Red Spot on show. Visible from Sydney at 21:37 so approx. around then for the rest of eastern Australia.
Western Australia will get to enjoy the Great Red Spot at 19:37 WST.

For more details, open up your Astronomy Australia 2018 book (by Ken Wallace, Glenn Dawes, Peter Northfield from Quasar Publishing) to p.115 for GRS, p119 for transit, p35 for other Jupiter events. Book is available through our online shop.
Enjoy! -Suzy.

If you have Sky Safari, select Jupiter, double click for details and it lists upcoming transits for the next couple of days - in your local time.

There’s a wealth of data available in Sky Safari once you know where to find it - no need for printed ephemerises anymore, IMHO.

And then there’s this page which has been mentioned before:
https://www.projectpluto.com/jevent.htm

As it’s calm, and autumn .. guess what ... the RFS sets fire to a chunk of the blue mountains, guaranteeing crap seeing for another week. Rather ironic imho in respect of the debates around carbon emissions and environmental protection ... in some respects I’d have to say stuff this, a good summer bushfire will do what is needed.

g day Martin,

i am impressed by your images posted elsewhere here. How did your transit evening go and were the neighbours impressed?

i was keeen to see the events but so much smog around Kiama saw me set up at the Blow Hole (which was performing amazzzingly and invite tennis friends. we really couldn't see the shadow or Europa at 200x in the 16". too much Earthly atmosphere. but friends were impressed by the equatorial stripes and GRS, splitting Alpha Cent, Omega Cent, jewel box and Saturn.
i enjoyed watching Europa egress after friends left capping off a good night.

Quasar Publishing (3 amateur astronomers) do an annual Astronomy Australia guide to the night sky includes daily graphics/list of Jupiter's Galilean moon events that are visible. Often available at Nat Geographic shops. a lo/no tech. option.

regards, L
