M42

Last chance at clear sky last night so I gave the 150ED a run on M42 which was about 30 degrees away from the moon. This is 9x1 minutes so I could keep the Trapezium visible. The main stars are still blown out so I'm going to try some shorter exposures.

I tried 1 sec on the Homunculus (eta carinae) but that was too long as it was blown out.

The L-enhance tends to makes things more red but here's a toned down version.

A lot of great detail in that core. Seemed to work. Is there a way to combine with another image without the filter.?

I'm sure there is but I'm content with just getting a reasonably clear image (not meant to sound defensive - exact colour just isn't something I bother with).

The main outcome I'd like to achieve at the moment is getting more time on fainter images to have them look more smooth after processing and not have to stretch as much - especially the Vela image.

Easy for me to idly speculate when what you have is already so detailed. More time required on a target for me is always difficult, and would be great. Combining images from different sessions seems to have its own challenges.

Nice shots Tony,

I prefer the toned down version myself & would say, I think there is in fact more detail visible in the second one. Much more sublte variations & the dark areas come through nicely..

My 2 cents...

Nice tight stars in the core. I agree with the others that the second version has better contrast and therefore more preferable.

Thanks for the comments guys.
I'd like to try some shorter exposures to get a better shot of the Trapezium.
One thing about M42 - just about any shot of it looks impressive
