You have done well Mick, and I'm sure you will get some awesome images with that lot, It is said that the 400mm F/5.6 is a pretty neat bit of glass, looking forward to some pics when you get it up and running.

Sounds like a great pair, I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the 50D.

For astro work, have you considered when you get your 50D, getting the 400D modded? If modded, the 400D + 400 f/5.6 would make for some stunner widefields!

l did think about it Alex but l don't like the images produced with modded cameras, especially deep space pics. this is a single 12 min exposure with the 400D and Saxon 100 ED so l don't see the need.

True.. modded dslr pics always seem too red..

Your Eta is VERY nice, although Eta Carina is perhaps not the best target to show off a cameras Ha response...

I do understand what you mean though...
I look forward to the first light images with the 400mm !

l agree, not a great target but in general l find the photos more of a saturated red than subtle red.

Nice buy Mick, I'm very curious about the 50D, I was going to wait for the 5DII buy I fear with the drop in the $AU it may be unaffordable.
