Nikon 105 f/1.4: the ultimate astrophotography lens ?

This lens would be an excellent bright lens for medium field AP.
Aperture 75mm (105/1.4) and FOV 13x20 degrees on FF and can be mounted on Canon and Sony bodies with adapter, but priced $2200 (A$3000).

Is this really worth ?

If you've experienced the 105/2.8 lens this will be a no brainer and so much more practical as a walk around lens than a 50mm. My 105/2.8 has served me best of all my lenses.

Of course presuming the 105/1.4 will be made to the same quality standards as the 105/2.8 the price will be a bargain. Even better news there will be a ton of affordable 105/2.8 lenses on the second hand market as people upgrade, i doubt any photographers would want and use both lenses.

It could be good. Though I have yet to experience a Nikon or other lens F1.4 or faster that did not have a lot of chromatic aberration. By the time you stop it down to get rid of it you are back to F2.8 anyway.

The 85 1.8G was like that. So it would have to be to a higher standard than that. The Samyang 24 1.4 would work at F2.

I have a Nikon 105 2.8 AIS which cost hardly anything and is a beautiful lens. They are plentiful 2nd hand.

The only F1.4 lens I am aware of that can handle wide open for astro is the Sigma Art 35 1.4.

Not to be a downer but I would definitely check this point out if that is the only reason you want that lens.

105mm will require tracking as well and would not be useful untracked.

Greg.
