Beginners Photography book recommendations?

Can anyone recommend a good photography book/magazine for a beginner to intermediate user?

My wife and I are now duelling with cameras I have the 350D Marg as the 500D.

The manuals are a good start.

No photography book I know is going to explain the difference between Canon-specific terminology such as One shot AF, AI Servo AF, AI Focus AF, etc.

I've only got wedding photography books so can't offer any recommendations, other than learning the rules of composition and when/how to break them, then learning about light. Having said that, I see titles like Understanding Exposure pop up on fora quite often. Might be a good place to start?

The Canon manuals are pretty good.Take the time to go through them-they become like little green and white bibles.

Magazines,I have found not overly useful.

I did buy a book "The Digital Photography Book Volume 2" by Scott Kelby.

I found it good and useful.His style is perhaps may be just a tiny bit too laid

back,but overall its written in a simple style which is easy to understand and

allow one to put into use the thoughts he wants to put across.

There is kinda sort of little recipes of how to go about doing certain photography,In certain type of situations-its helped me a bit,so yeah it was worth it.

There is a version 1 of this book,unfortunately I do not have it,but would like to buy it-if anyone knows where I can get a copy,please let me know.

The book that H mentions, Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson, is quite good if you're at the level where you don't yet have a solid understanding of the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and ISO.

Instead of buying books, I'd use the Internet - there's plenty of free photography tutorials available on the Internet, and some of them are quite good. Try browsing the learning section at www.photo.net for starters. I've always found the Cambridge in colour site's digital tutorials interesting too:

As H has said, read the camera manuals. Get to know the camera.

And most importantly, practice, practice and thrice practice.
