Unhappy Interesting experience with DSS

Thought I would start with a relatively large and bright galaxy - M83. Canon 1100DSLR 30s subs at 1600 ISO. M83 faintly visible on each of the subs (RAW). DSS stacked 17 subs - no M83 visible! Played around with the RGB, luminance and saturation without result.
Presumably, I am missing something?

You need to stretch the image in exposure by moving the red , green and blue curves to align with each other at their peak, while the black curve line passes through the part of the colour curves where it transitions upward from the bottom sharp colour curve. Do this using the sliders for each colour.

Ps. Don’t forget to tick the box for saving the 16 bit tiff files with adjustments so you can check them with PS . Other wise you will need stretch the non adjusted stacked file in other programs such as the free Clarke Vision program or export registered calibrated files from DSS by ticking the stacking preference , and stack and stretch in CCD Stacker or other stacking and editing programs.

Photo programs will not generally be able to stretch the exposure sufficiently without stretching first in DSS or some other specialised program.

Thanks for that advice, Ray. Nice rain day here (we have been in drought) to spend some time on the computer.

Hi Kevin,

It’s not unusual for the stacked image to be 1. More feint and 2. Lacking in colour once stacked in DSS. If you load the saved TIFF up in Photoshop it will straight away be brighter. That’s when you can start stretching the image and extracting the detail and also increasing the saturation to bring out your colours. I have found Galaxies harder to process than bright nebulae. Spend some time on it though and see what you can come up with. Processing Astro images is not easy and we’re all always learning with it.

Good luck and I’m looking forward to seeing your results.

Ryan

Realised belatedly that DSS 2009 version (I can't use current version because Microsoft no longer supports Windows 8 and therefore vital dll won't load) was only converting part of the RAW images and M83 wasn't there at all. Having laboriously converted all the RAW files into TIFF, was then able to stack and get something to play with in Photoshop Essentials.
Will put result up after reducing to thumbnail.
Thanks for the helpful comments.

That is a shame.

I use a very old Win 7 for DSS and can import raw files straight from the camera which recognises all the file info. Makes life a lot easier.

Maybe if you have an old computer laying around it would work.

At least there is something there! Needs a bit more work.
