Taken on the 17th Feb 2007, at Kulnura on new moon weekend.
- Canon 350D + 50mm f/1.8 lens @ f/2.2, ISO800, ICNR on.
- Tracked on EQ6 mount
- 6 exposures combined, exposures were: 1x54s, 5x120s.
- IRIS used to align and register the RAWs and perform other black magic.
- Photoshop for final levels and curves.
Quite happy with how this turned out! It's nothing like Humayan's brilliant LMC efforts, but for a first effort i'm pleased.
Good shot Mike, and nothing like success to start with.
I'm with the Ponder, I thought it was receeding at warp speed.
Nice shot just the same, whats next?
Gary
Nice one Mike Try stopping your camera down one or two stops, it might help with the long stars in the corners.
yeh I thought the 50mm wouldn't have the abberations in the corners but it still does. and that's AFTER doing some geometric black magic in Iris to correct it a bit. It was worse before
Well done Mike, yeah my 50mm lense doesn`t come good to about f/3.5 at f/2.8 still shows some coma but not too bad if you want the speed..
Lookin good ...:thumbs up:
Nice result mike, once again I like the natural look, you could always crop a little to take out the edge abberations. Can you swap lenses next time and give us a comparison with the 17-70 at the same F/L...??

May I suggest try tweaking focus a little at f1.8 and get the best possible stars in all 4 corners in the preview screen (i.e don't focus using the centre of the frame). Once the best point of focus is found note where this position in the distance scale. You will problably find it is not exactly at infinity but slightly to one side. Remember this point for future reference. Once the point of best focus is found, stop down to say f4. No matter what you do you will get coma at the corners at f2.2 and it doesn't go until around f3.5 or f4. This was a best effort at f1.8 with this same lens:
Phil, this is a starfield comparison where I took the top left hand corners from both lenses and enlarged 300%. The 17-70 was set at 65mm FL @ f4.5 and made with a standard 350D rescaled to match the 300D. The 50 1.8 is at f4 with a modded 300D. From using both lens quite a bit and from this test the 50 1.8 is definitely sharper corner to corner at the same apertures than the 17-70, but the zoom is still very good.
