Steps for solar processing.

I was just wondering if some of the solar images could refer me to a web site outlining steps in solar image acquisition and processing. The telescope we will be using a Hunt 100mm Ha with 1800 blocking filter and DMK 21 and 41.

Thank you

Mark.

Whoooo
A Lunt 100/B1800 +DMK41 is a killer combo!
The best website for solar observing/ techniques is Solar Chat...
http://solarchat.solarastronomy.org/index.php/en/

In the Library section there are many threads on solar imaging and processing.

I am jealous of that set up!
Here is what I remember off the cuff with the DMK capture settings.

-Save images as (drop down menu) Y800
-Set Gain far left 142
-Gamma 60-100
-Exp - not sure for the 100, but 60 is at 1/142 or 1/182
-Get focus, muck around with the pressure tuner
-hit the red dot and you will save AVI
-press stop when done - take about 1500 images first up

I process in Regisatx5. My basic run
-select (file) - image should come up
-go to the slider at the bottom of the screen
-scroll across until you get a crisp image (better than the others)
-select about 85% quality in the Lowest Quality field
-Alignment Method - default
-Alignment box - 128
-Place the box on a feature and enter
-press Align (top left)
-when done you can see how many frames have been selected (bottom of screen)
-you will want to stack at least 100 frames, so adjust the Lowest Quality field up or down until the frame number is 100ish
-press limit
-press Optimise and Stack
You should now have a stacked image that you can process
-slide the wavelet bars to increase details (click do all)
-you can now muck around with gamma, brightness etc
-go to final and save.

It will take about 10 goes to get familiar but worth the time.

Matt

I'm going to have to fess up to being a complete numpty here, but I've seen so many references to the solarchat forum over the last few years, but everytime I try and follow the link I get a server timeout error.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Is there some secret trick I don't know about? I mean, left-clicking on a link is pretty damn tricky...
thanks in advance!
Andrew.

Andrew,
Unfortunately the Solar Chat website has been hit by so many spammers that Stephen has had to change the registration set-up.
The fastest way to join would be to drop him an email at:
sramsden@natca.net
Are other members having the same access difficulty???

Solar Chat access

I questioned Stephen about the problem:

I don't know. There are no problems on this end. Maybe try solarchat.natca.net as this is the real web address? solarchat.solarastronomy.org is just an alias
They could also just register for an account via an email to me.

Hope this helps.

Dammit Mark - can I come and do Grade 12 again at your school? It was over 30 years ago so I need a refresher

Heck the kids are lucky having you too on tap to inspire and teach

We are very excited. We will be starting with Bohr's model of the atom, energy levels, spectroscopy, hydrogen alpha, telescopes, and their assignment is on the history of the telescope and how they work and the practical component requires each student to image widefield, solar system object and a deep sky object with stacking and processing. It should be fun.
