Mask Process to Fix Blown Out Image

I want to use a Layer Mask (Photosop CC 2015), to fix up a blown out centre section of M8 in my narrowband image. I have re-shot M8 at a reduces sub exposure to gain a good exposure of the blown out section. I know i have to select the area of the replacement layer and put it on the base layer but what are the correct steps in the process?

Copy base and create layer1, work on layer 1 to acheive the image you want then erase the section over the over blown section with an low transparency setting in the tool.
The brightest layer needs to be on top so you erase part of that to see the less processed image below.
You can do this with multiple layers, processing each layer to a certain point for some particular feature then copying and processing further then erasing to expose below.
I've had it up to 5 before.

Went to a course on it where it was explained and demo'd in great complicated detail with all the right terms. Then figured it out that it was just rubbing it out in each layer. Orginal 'background' layer remains untouched is the key and work your way up. You can also apply it in each of the RGB layers for local colour correction.

I used this guide for the Orion nebula:

It worked quite well.

Thanks for that info. I am thinking that i need to do each of the narrowband filter images (Ha and OIII at least) separately while they are still grey scale, as the reshoot at shorter times is by filter type. So i would follow the mask process for the grey scale Ha then the OIII before they are colourised. SII is not a problem.

Russell i don't understand how dropbox works. I looked the last time you suggested it but could not work out how to get a file to you. I don't want to have to join something or pay a fee i could put a file into the Astrobin file area where you could get it.
I still need to know how to do this for the future.
Thanks

Dropbox can be free, the program creates a Dropbox folder on your computer that you can drop files into to be loaded into the cloud.
If you want to share a file, just right click on it and it'll say "Copy Public Link" or something to that effect
