It's been a few years ... OK, 25 ..... but I used to ride daily. I remember gel seats being all the rage. When I got my new bike (mostly as a dust collector, of course) I got one of them holey sets. While it felt good in the shop, it "bit" on the road, so I got a gel saddle cover for it as well. It's just bearable in that configuration.

Try a few in the shop, but sit on it for more the a few minutes if you can.

BTW, nether region numbness from cycling is no laughing matter - that can lead to a serious medical condition. It's not so much that you need to harden up, it's that you need to avoid doing anything that stops you from ... ahem .. hardening up ...

Presactly.

Wife has a gel seat and it is better for me. I'll get one tomorrow. I rode mine today for 5km, and my butt was crying after 2.5... my gingangoolies survived thanks to good underdaks though It was 38°, so not "user friendly" day for it.

Have never seen so much empathy (or lack thereof) in this forum.

You certainly touched everyones sympathies with this subject.

Hi Lewis

Search for 'shy shorts' such as these, they have most of the advantages of the lycra ones, but, not nearly as obvious.

I found the split saddles much better than the normal ones. It can take buying a few before you find one you are really happy with. Depends on the distance you are going as well.

As for discomfort on the butt, I find that goes away, a few days after some 20km rides.

Have fun, and drink plenty of water while riding.

I found that I was drinking 2 water bottles on the way home (during summer), and more when I got there! I bought a 3L version of one these, and occaisionally emptied it on the way home.

No I got the seat separately. I've had it for a while now and it feels as good as it looks, even after some serious mileage.

I use a pair of Endura Humvee baggy mountain bike shorts.
Mine came with the now optional clickfast inner lining (read padded underpants).
They aren’t cheap but work well and you don’t look ridiculous.

FWIW, your bum will toughen up if you ride more frequently. Hard core riders use butt cream (Chamois Cream) stops chafing, that may help.

Seat height and position are important, too low and or too far fore or aft and you put extra pressure “down there”

There is no way in Hades I am wearing bike pants - spandex on lard butts is humorous at best - there will be bulges everywhere. Is there any seat type that perhaps has a "man hole", or a short seat without the extended bit?

I need to get in shape a little (understatement), but this is just ridiculous, especially being hot presently which makes things more gravity inclined. I would like to retain the ability to father more children if need be

Simple, like new shoes, you keep at it

Also IF you can afford a proper saddle

I use a good leather one

Lewis, if you have not adjusted your seat this is a good start.

I was a bicycle mech for years and have heard all this before, sounds like your seat isn't angled right. You need 3 points of even contact, just under your balls and both butt bones if you have a seat putting more pressure either way your going to have a bad time.
Go and see Mick at onya bike belco and he can help you out. I use to work there many years ago.
