Saturn and Jupiter, 25th July

Some nice conditions on the 25th for views of Jupiter and Saturn.

I got a touch experimental for a look down on Saturn, taking advantage of WinJupos' mapping functions. Near opposition, it's possible to quite faithfully reproject to the polar view. I needed to take a liberty and paste in a piece of the faint C Ring otherwise lost in the glare in front of Saturn, and I've cleaned up the terminator on Saturn for edge effects; otherwise the data is real, just reprojected. But I like the view from above, with round rings, the Hexagon and the curved shadow on the rings. Unfortunately its obviously not possible to see the Ringshine that brightly illuminates Saturn's northern night side when the rings are wide open like this!

More Saturn

Really enjoy seeing your planetary images Andy, the detail and colours gives me something to aspire to. Obviously a lot comes down to the processing arts to polish the data from nights of good seeing. Thanks for sharing.

Unbelievably beautiful images of Jupiter and Saturn, Andy. Congrats!

The Atik 460EX is one of 4 OSC cameras on my shortlist (though I will use whatever I buy primarily for deep space photography)

Cheers,
Richard

Those shots are just stunning Andy.
Thanks for sharing.

The inner ring of saturn seems like a smoke haze just hovering in place!

Thanks, nice when the conditions are friendly! Richard, the Atik is good fun, it's my deep sky camera too, though it gets used less just now, too many interesting planets

Looks excellent Andy.
What software do you use for the projections?

Marc, it's WinJupos - amazing tools for polar and equirectangular projections so that you can plot, compare and collect timeseries data.
