350D CR2 problems

Hi guys I have a problem with my 350D. On a few occasions some of the photos that I take don't come out. When I download them onto the computer I get a box telling me that windows cannot open this file. They are normal photos not astro photos. These photos have CR2 after the photo number. I tried to follow the links to the Canon website and I could only find problems for Vista. Can someone advise please.

Regards Cristian

The CR2 files are RAW files and assuming you are using XP then you need to download the Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer for Windows XP.

Follow this link.

Christian, if you're using Photoshop, there's a Canon raw plugin for that as well.

You might also give GIMP (for Windows, Mac or Linux) a go which accepts a great plugin called "UFRaw" at http://ufraw.sf.net/ which reads all raw digital image formats. A very comprehensive tool indeed and free (as is GIMP).

Cheers
Chris

However, you shouldn't be "accidently" taking raw images. These are used when you want to do most of the processing yourself, as opposed to letting the camera do it. The thumbnails that windows plugins give are really just jpg (ie processed) versions of the raw image. There are two zones in the 350D, the "point and shoot" and the "advanced". Point and shoot never gives raws, the advanced remembers the previous setting, so I suspect your advanced section is set to raw. You can change this to jpg via the menu.
